On This Date : Photo taken 9/19/2009 Reeds in the water at Maple River State Game Area, north of St Johns, Michigan. The SGA's mostly about birds. Sandpipers and egrets, herons and swallows, gulls and sandhill cranes. And an occasional eagle, fishing. We also see turtles--a really large one, once--and muskrats. And countless other birds and critters. ========== We venture out to Maple River once or twice a year. The scenery's excellent, as is the birding. The September, 2009, outing was exceptional; reviewing my photographs from that day has been fun. On This Date : Photo taken 9/15/2011 Lansing Lugnut shortstop Peter Mooney relays the ball to first base. The baserunner, who's out, is Ronny Gil of the Quad Cities River Bandits; Mooney's throw would not get QC batter/runner Oscar Taveras. The Midwest League's regular season ends on Labor Day, and is followed by a three-tiered playoff that ends in mid-month. In 2011 Lansing hosted Quad Cities (they play in Davenport) on September 15 for the second game of a best-of-five series. The Bandits won the game by a 5-3 score, putting them up on the series 2 wins to no losses. They'd wrap the championship up at home the next night. ========== Two pics today. Because I want to tell two stories. Just a reminder that I take lots of photographs at baseball games, only a few of which have shown up in this project. On This Date : Photo taken 12/30/2006 On the next-to-last day of 2006 Joan and I decided to find and explore Eaton County's Lincoln Brick Park , on the northern edge of Grand Ledge. We found ruins, and trees, and the Grand River, and trails. A swimming hole, too. It's an excellent park with truly great scenery. But the park's heart's the ruins. These days the park's rather more developed than it was in 2006. But it's still a place with interesting ruins. ========== Rather oddly, neither the Eaton County nor the Pure Michigan pages about the park mention the ruins. Which seems to miss the point. On This Date : Photo taken 12/11/2016 On December's first day with snow I generally stay home and photograph birds through the window. I occasionally get distracted by the needles on the pines, or the leaves on the crabapple. Or the snowflakes. I didn't quite nail the focus on this one, and I mebbe shoulda bumped the aperture to f/8. But gosh I like it. ========== "On December's first day with snow..."--the roads aren't safe. So I stay home, avoiding the crazies. Retired people can do that. On This Date : Photo taken 8/14/2014 Bobby's a long-time performer and promoter of bluegrass and country music in southeast Michigan. Here he's on stage with his band, Grand Ole Country, at the Milan Bluegrass Festival in 2014. Two years later, at the same festival, Bobby was inducted into the Southeast Michigan Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Honor. ========== Ain't that a great face? I've been posting a ton of pix from the 2017 Milan festival this week, so there's some danger this one will get buried amongst the others. I'm hoping not; this is one of my favorites.
