Even Older Snow

17 Jan 2006 131
Deep snow at 1318 Palmer Avenue in Kalamazoo. Compare this view with the 1972 photo I took of the same sunporch for a sense of scale; there's a lot more snow in this pic. The icicles were a constant decoration, or bother. Dad's slide dates from the 1950s. We moved to the Palmer house in 1957, and I suspect this was taken during our first winter. Since we stayed there for fifteen years, the two pictures demonstrate the change in appearance of the house during our tenure. Things badly needed paint at this point; I'd guess this is a winter '57-'58 picture just from the state of the window frames. The house was never in poor shape, but we devoted a lot of effort to keeping things up. Looks like our predecessors weren't so determined to do that. Camera: Argus C3

Sleeping Bear 1973

Another of my father's photos from atop the Sleeping Bear dune.... Explored! #317 on Friday, August 3, 2007. Thanks!

Lake Michigan 1973

28 Apr 2006 82
Scanned from one of Dad's slides. Mom & Dad were vacationing in the Petoskey area, but I can't tell you which beach this captures.... Neat clouds!

Lake Michigan Beach

14 Jan 2006 147
This could be almost anywhere on Lake Michigan; it's probably somewhere around Petoskey. Mom & Dad were staying in Good Hart that vacation, I think. One of a set of similarly generic--but very pretty--Lake Michigan slides, some of which I imagine I'll post. They include a couple shots of that impressive rock. 1976, probably with Dad's Argus C3.

Elsie & Hatti

31 Dec 2005 130
My grandmother and my mother; I think this is Hardy Dam but that opinion's subject to correction. September, 1975. I believe this was Grandma Kroeger's last trip to Michigan. She grew up in Iowa, moved to Kalamazoo when she was about 40, then to San Diego a few years later. Her children settled in those places and others, so she'd occasionally tour the country to visit them. A pretty day at the dam. Roger Dinda photograph; Argus C3.

Country Road

Somewhere in Southwest Michigan. Photo taken by my father in the early 1960s, probably with his Argus C3. (Former) Flickr'r Leon says you should press "L" view it on black.

Glen Lake

29 Dec 2005 77
From the top of the dune at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in 1973. The national park was only a couple years old at the time. Worth noting: The farm in the foreground, and its surrounding orchards, seem to be gone , now. Local residents were quite opposed to the establishment of the national park, fearing that the feds would preempt their property, attract undesirable tourists, and generally disrupt the place. They weren't shy about telling visitors their opinions, either. Since we visited the area quite regularly, we heard those opinions many times. The hostility continues, by the way, though it's less visible to visitors. The Parks Service has an excellent discussion of the issues, and the history of its relations with local landowners, on the Sleeping Bear website. Dad's photograph shows the terrain well, but doesn't do justice to Glen Lake's riot of colors. Scanned from a Roger Dinda slide; Argus C3.

Unknown Waterfall

Anyone know what fall this is? Somewhere in Upper Michigan, 1962. Roger Dinda photograph, taken with an Argus C3. Scanned from a slide.
