St Joseph Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Dimondale

Former church building, near Dimondale, Michigan. The parish has since moved to Lansing. I have no relation to the congregation; I took these photographs because the building is attractive, and because I had a brand-new camera I wanted to try out.
This sign would lead you to think the parish is named St Joseph Melkite, but in truth "Melkite" is the denomination .
Old Schoolhouse

Eaton County has several old, one-room schoolhouses. One is still functioning as a school, and another survived into the twenty-first century but closed a couple years ago, but most--like this one--have long since been converted to dwellings. It's not obvious from this photo, but this building still sports the school bell.

Seventeen Three views of St Joseph's. These photos were taken because I had a new camera and thought (& still think) the building was attractive. I have no connection with this congregation.
The church was located near Dimondale, Michigan, when I shot these photos in (I think) late 1988. The parish has moved to Lansing.
This was originally a schoolhouse. When I posted this it housed an antique shop. Now (5/1/13) it's a house.
This set was shot with a point-n-shoot 110 camera. Some of the photos are quite sharp, but most have the characteristic graininess of 110 film. All were scanned from prints, as my scanner cannot handle small negatives.

Strange School

A still-functioning one-room school at the corner of Oneida Road and Strange Highway, Eaton County, Michigan. The name's a historical reference, as the Stranges were among the first local settlers .

Strange School's a still-operating one room school at the corner of Strange Highway and Oneida Road, south of Grand Ledge. The school's building was built and opened in 1879; Eaton County District No. 3 was originally created in the 1830s. This has been Eaton County's only one room school since Loucks School (near Mulliken) closed in June of 2002.
There's a centennial history of the school on the school's website . Can't say I recommend it.
==========
John and George Strange were among the first settlers in Oneida Township; they first explored the area and purchased land in 1836, though they'd not immediately move to that land.
Daniel Strange, John's son, wrote the quite readable Pioneer History of Eaton County which was published by the Eaton County Pioneer and Historical Society in 1923. This history I do recommend .
==========
This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
Number of project photos taken: 32
Title of " roll :" Strange School
Other photos taken on 7/5/2012: none--unless you count a couple videos of an unexpectedly heavy rain.
