Canoes

19 Sep 2006 76
In the "warehouse" outside the stockade at Grand Portage National Monument in northern Minnesota. These are (real) birch canoes, and the larger ones are in the fashion of those used by the Voyageurs to navigate the Great Lakes. One of the canoes is sixty years old, which is apparently ancient for this technology. Not sure how often it gets used, though evidently these all get into the water occasionally. The park interpreter in this building was discussing the Voyageurs, and the portage, and Alexander Mackenzie's discovery of a route to the Pacific. Although the post was not in Canada, it was staffed by Canadians and the interpreters tend to have Canadian viewpoints. Refreshing, really, in an American National Park.

The other day Larry asked "Where's the casino?" Of course, in May of 1991 Sarnia's Casino was still a warehouse. (I'm quite certain Larry actually knows that.) Far more interesting to look at, too, if you ask me. Taken from Port Huron with my Chinon Genesis III and a too-grainy roll of film. That's the (still singular) Blue Water Bridge in the background.

Let's recap earlier discussion: This building's in the middle of a field , north of Eaton Rapids, Michigan. It's on the abandoned right-of-way of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad , which was a component of the New York Central System. The track beside this building was pulled up in 1940. I don't know what the original function of the building was, nor much about subsequent use. Closer examination reveals that this warehouse is actually an array of buildings, and includes a couple of mysterious peripheral structures.

This is a new photograph, but: Back when I was discovering the abandoned Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad line between Jonesville and Lansing, this building was the biggest surprise. As I showed the other day, it's a large warehouse out in the middle of a field. It's an interesting place. I'll give you a little tour over the next few weeks. Bunker Road, north of Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Camera: Minolta SR-T 101.

Um.... What's That?

It's a warehouse in a field. An old warehouse. We'll take you closer in a day or two....
