White Pine

16 Apr 2005 142
I planted three small white pines--two side-by-side in the front, the other near the yard's back corner--early in 1992, hoping they'd eventually grow to reasonable size. (Small, indeed--I carried them home in my Chevy Nova. Took three trips.) They've grown to be fairly substantial trees, and I'm satisfied. The trees sat in the wind tunnel for a week or so before I found time to plant them. A pair of wrens figured they were fair game, and started to build a nest in one of the trees. They got quite upset when I moved their home into the yard....

Two Pines, actually, with a bonus Oak for good measure.

Gone Yellow

Best LARGE. Or just press L to see it on black. Every autumn the pines shed about a third of their needles. First, though, those turn yellow. When I bought this house there were no trees in the yard, except for two small maples by the street. The first summer I bought a spruce and couple maples; the evergreen has thrived, and my maples did well until a twister got 'em. The next summer I added three then-very-small white pines. They've grown quite tall. The village's maples, along the road, remain quite small; I suspect they unintentionally planted dwarves.

Raindrops

It didn't rain a lot last spring, which was generally good for my photography but not so good for my neighbors' crops. Or my yard. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . It Was Windy Out There A Year Ago

Except for the lack of color, my 366 Snaps pix for the day looked a whole lot like my daily flower census pix.... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Needles

Our spruce tree, up close. The same photo today would show a bit of snow.... ========== Never left the yard last January 26. Shot a few pictures of the cat . Then into the yard where I shot what I've been calling rehearsals --you'll see better versions of some of those. Then I captured some neighbors' back yards from ours. ========== Last year's pic-of-the-day : When I moved in, our house had been recently moved from another town into an open field, and we didn't have any near neighbors. Photographing the (then) McMurphy family's willow was easy across the meadow. Over two decades new houses and a garage (and plantings!) have made framing the photographs more difficult, but that tree's still one of the neighborhood's most attractive features. By the way: A few months ago I told y'all a a story about an armadillo . The beasty lived in a (different) shed, under the willow. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
