A Road Into the Woods

I pass this view every time I drive to Kalamazoo and have been promising myself I'd catch it in a photo. So today I stopped. Saddlebag Lake Road, south of Woodbury, Michigan.

And an inconvenient telephone pole. The map claims this is at Freeport (Michigan), but I'd have thought Woodland. Or Hastings. Charlton Park Road just south of M-43, regardless.

Barn

Same photo of the Woodland, Michigan, barn, without my usual processing. In some ways I like this better; in others I prefer the "cleaner" version. As mentioned in the comments on the other photo, this was shot from a moving car. Pretty much an opportunity shot; I had the camera out in an (unsuccessful) effort to photograph the snow drifting across the road.

Wet & Chilly Main Street, Woodland

I'd spent the night in Kalamazoo, and the day's 366 Snaps shots documented my drive home. The weather was abysmal, and the photographs show villages in the rain. Today's weather, for the record, was worse--added ice to the mix. I'd not have driven 70 miles under those conditions. ========== If there's a single photo-a-day project that most influenced mine, it's Vishal Patel's Project 365 , which ended the day before my 366 Snaps began. V and I are very different photographers--he's more formal, more vivid, plans more thoroughly, and is prone to a very different kind of experimentation. But following his photography from day to day was an inspiration. Just wanted to get in this plug as my project winds down. His set's certainly worth a bit of your time. ========== I stopped at Mulliken's Thriftway, as usual, just before I got home, and took the photo I posted to 366 Snaps. It's of Boyer's , but since it was shot through the wet car window the pic's a bit, well, distorted. Jim, who runs the Thriftway, noticed me taking pix, apparently for the first time, and gave me a (mock) hard time about it. This was odd, because I'm always taking photographs from ( and of ) his parking lot. Jim's really in no position to criticize, as I pointed out, since he has sixteen cameras monitoring his small store and grounds. Regardless, the conversation was the highlight of the trip. I was glad to be home. Again, for emphasis: We're friends, and were gaming each other. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Woodland's a small village about fifteen miles down M-43 from mine. Like Mulliken, it was once a grain elevator town, though the buildings that housed both of the town's grain businesses are largely gone these days. So's the railroad track the elevators originally lived on. The Chicago, Kalamazoo, and Saginaw failed in 1937. ========== This is an alternate crop of the photo I posted to Flickr for 366 Snaps a year ago. Oddly, I posted this crop to Facebook last July 17--carelessness, I guess. ========== I took this photo on a trip to Kalamazoo, where I would accompany my sister to a doctor visit which resulted in an extended hospital stay. I don't plan to discuss my sister's medical problems, nor my brother's, but it's going to become abundantly clear that I spent a lot of time at Borgess Hospital over the second half of last year. I'm sure I'll mention this again, because it will be unavoidable. But you should expect no details. ========== This photograph is an outtake (actually, an alternate crop) from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
