Clutter

Jim Lovins had some reason for calling this photo "Joint"--but I prefer my title.
Another of Jim's photographs from our Vietnam year. I've misplaced his description of this photograph, but the sense of it was that he couldn't recall the subject's name; I suspect it's Rick. Edmiston?
Me--well, I like the clutter: The disparate gates, the guard tower in the near foreground, the ladders, the building, the wires, the water tower, and the tropo antennae up on the hill. Really obviously taken in the hospital compound. A terrific photograph, precisely because it violates all sorts of "rules."

Party

Until we started running the CommCenter on a skeleton staff, parties were a common diversion. Jim and I both caught more than one on film.

At the time, hiring maids to clean up after us seemed like an extravagance, albeit an inexpensive one. In retrospect, it probably made sense; twenty-year old men just don't clean up after themselves....

Jim Lovins photograph. I mentioned a few weeks ago that Jim was a townie ...
Pleiku, Republic of Vietnam, 1971; camera unknown (to me, anyway.) My general plan is to post some of Jim's pix for the next few weeks.

A Veterans Day memory. Memories, unfortunately, are fragile....
Members of Signal Support Detachment Pleiku, or perhaps its predecessor Company A of the 146th Signal company, relax out in front of the barracks in late 1970 or early 1971. This view shows one of the walkways at the Pleiku Army Hospital, with Tropo Hill a rather ghostly presence in the background.
Although I recognize most of these faces, I can't seem to come up with any names. Sorry, guys; if you want to help, feel free.

Lots of notes on the Flickr copy of this photo . Worth a look.
