Petoskey, Michigan. Although this one shows up on the usual lighthouse lists, it's not what people usually think of as a lighthouse. Or even a harbor light.
Old Light, New Light

This photo shows the old Grand Traverse Light--it's peeking through the trees on the left--and the ugly steel construction which made it obsolete in 1972. Leelanau State Park includes these lights and a nearby campground; several miles away the park has a small wilderness area we can also recommend. There's a good museum in the lighthouse, and there's often a variety of birds in the trees.

Replaced by the New Light in 1871, and long since a museum. We were a little annoyed by the bait-n-switch tactics of the historical society--the roadside sign didn't mention the (quite reasonable, actually) fee, so we shot this from the beach, down the road.

From the beach, in front of the light. They tell me there's a shipwreck down the beach a bit, but we didn't go looking for it, largely because the flies were pretty aggressive.
This lighthouse looks more like a schoolhouse than most. That house is a duplex; half is in use, I gather, while the other half is the main part of the museum.

The lighthouse keeper at Forty Mile Point had a little office in the tower, just below the light, where he did the apparently-voluminous paperwork required by his bosses.
Only a workable solution in such a wide tower, I'd think.

Forty Mile Point was already a county park when we first visited this light a few years ago, and they were beginning to do the museum thing. But our memory of the trip is the miserable weather: Heavy rain, heavy fog.
