Mesabi Miner

29 Aug 2005 84
My favorite of thousand foot Lakers. Since they all look about alike, I get to select on the basis of name. Many Great Lakes freighters honor officers of the mining, shipping, and processing companies, so it's a delight to find a boat named for the folks who do the backbreaking work. Interlake's Mesabi Miner leaves Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie. The approach to MacArthur Lock is in the foreground. The original shot was overexposed; I've done some minor color correction but the detail just wasn't there....

Algorail

Port Huron, Michigan. From the front, Algorail 's not a pretty ship ; I much prefer her from this angle. This photo looks best in its original size . Added to Flickr's Cream of the Crop as my most "interesting" picture. Explored! #85 on Flickr [February 12, 2007 but no longer in the day's top 500] So it goes. For years this was my most popular Flickr photo.

American Mariner

Marquette has two ore docks; the long-abandoned downtown dock and the Upper Harbor (commonly called Presque Isle, or LS&I) dock pictured here. This is a grainy picture, but it shows good detail about the operation of this old gravity dock. As you can see, there are excellent vantages for watching that labor at this dock. The photo dates from around 1990. When the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad built the Presque Isle dock in 1912, this was a state-of-the-art structure. It's now well past its prime, but it's a great place to watch ships. And trains. Camera: Minolta Freedom 100
