Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pierhead Light

21 Aug 2005 139
Explored! #147 [June 27, 2013] Thanks! The fisherman's listening to the Brewers/Astros game. This catwalk, by the way, seems to still be in use. It's definitely still being maintained, and there's an active Coast Guard Station (and another light) at the other end of the pier. December 30: Slightly changed--frameless--version posted today....

South Haven Breaker

Joan and I spent her birthday walking the beach and wandering around town. As you can see, the water was a little choppy.

Duncan Bay Sunset

Taken a few feet from our campsite at Cheboygan State Park. Looking toward the city across Duncan Bay. I'll be offline for a few days. See you around.

Chief's Car

18 Mar 2006 1 132
They bought the Chief a Buick. Martin Sernstinger took a bunch of photographs of Kalamazoo fire equipment in the mid-1950s; they have the look of official photographs but it's quite possible he was a firefighter. I inherited these pix from my dad, who was a firefighter for much of that decade. This photo was taken at the Kalamazoo fairgrounds; the horse-racing oval is in the background. I always thought that grandstand was something wonderful. Explored! #376 on Saturday, July 5, 2008, but no longer in the day's top 500. Thanks!

Bottom Bracket

12 Oct 2005 131
Explored! #299 [October 16, 2007] Thanks! Dismantled the bike over the weekend and took it to Assenmacher 's for a repaint last night. In another month it's gonna look new. I'm sure I'll post more pix at that time. Meantime, a few details: The frame was custom built by Matt Assenmacher in 1975 and has about 85,000 miles on it, 70K of them by 1986 when I finally bought a car. The Phil bottom bracket's been there since 1978. The crankset's a Stronglight 99; most of its parts date from 1975 but the left crank arm and small chainring are replacements. The bike was rebuilt with what eBay sellers call "New Old Stock" last spring, but I put the repaint off until winter because I wanted to get it on the road. Weather permitting, I'll still hit the road this fall, and maybe even winter. Just on a different bike.

Another Old Barn

01 Dec 2005 76
I like the texture and details on this one; nothing fancy, but lots of interesting stuff. It's just west of Grand Ledge on M-43. Looks like there used to be a farm house here, but I suppose it burned; three outbuildings remain to mark the homestead. Now in use by the farmer across the street. Another photo of these buildings. The sun and shadows play neat tricks on the place.

New Years Day, 1992

01 Jan 2006 93
Fourteen years ago today. One of my favorite photographs, even though it didn't scan very well. Mulliken, on Potter Street; across the road and a couple lots down from mine. For thirty years or so this was the "last house" in town, at least on Potter; then my neighbors and I came along and built (mine was moved) houses to expand the town. Couldn't reproduce this view today; too much has changed. Camera: Minolta Freedom 100

Against the Garage

A flower a day for January .... We pulled these up nearly a decade ago, to expand Joan's veggie garden. A couple bulbs live on in other locations. An old scan of an old photograph; someday I'll re-scan it.
