The St. Clair Encounters Engineers Day

28 Jan 2006 89
On a late Friday in June, the Corps of Engineers lets the tourists wander around the grounds at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Engineers Day, 2005, doubled as a kickoff to the Sault Locks Sesquicentennial. Best large; there's some great detail in this pic. Joan took this marvelous photograph of St. Clair in the Poe Lock, from the edge of the Macarthur Lock. I've cropped a lot of distracting nonsense from the shot, but the vision is hers. I took nothing half this good that day.

Walter J. McCarthy, Jr., Leaves the Sault

M/V Walter J. McCarthy of the American Steamships fleet heads toward Whitefish Point and beyond from the Sault locks in 1990, shortly after she was rechristened. For her first decade or so she was called Belle River, after the Detroit Edison plant she services. McCarthy was Detroit Edison's president; when he retired, the ship was renamed to honor him. William P Snyder Jr

"Oct 5, 1941 Steamer Snyder approaching Ambassador Bridge Detroit, Mich" Snyder was named after the president of the Shenango Furnace Company. She was built for that firm in 1912, and sailed under Shenango colors until sold in 1967. The ship was repowered in 1952, and had significant work done in 1971. After her Shenango career she was owned and sailed by the Interlake, Cleveland Cliffs, & American Bulk Shipping fleets. Scrapped in 1988 . Bowling Green University's Historical Collections of the Great Lakes has a large collection of materials from this ship. Detroit in the background. Notice the high smog level. Borucki's Lakers
