Memorial

Very pretty flowers from Mom's funeral , I think sent by the Banner family/Riverside Greenhouse. This basket decorated our front porch all last summer, then perished with the frost. A year later it lives on, carrying my mother's memory, in this photo.

Hatti and Rog Touch Feet

Mom and Dad, making contact across the living room early in 1972. This is the interior of our house at 1318 Palmer in Kalamazoo. I routinely take better pictures than this, but there aren't many I like better. Today would have been Mom's 84th birthday.

Mother's Day

My mother, Hatti Dinda, on Mother's Day in 2000, at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. That's Preacher Debra in the (near) background. Today would have been Mom's 82nd birthday.

Hatti in California

Another picture of Mom, to remember her birthday. This was taken in San Diego, perhaps by brother-in-law Bob Johns, around the turn of the century (that phrase still sounds wrong ). She and her sisters had gathered for what they all expected would be their last time in one place.

Mom would have been 80 today. Dad took this photo on an unspecified Lake Michigan beach in 1976. Actually, he took this picture three times, which was definitely out of character; but it's a nice picture. Looks comfy, doesn't she?

Mom and Lake Michigan

Fifteen years ago this week. I think this is Christmas Cove, which is north and west of Northport. Fundamentally, though, the precise location doesn't really matter; it's a beach, and that's Lake Michigan. My father passed away in November of 1990. A few months later I got a call from Mom, who'd decided to escape to Traverse City for a few days and invited me to come along. Of course I accepted. So in March of 1991 we spent a long weekend visiting places she and Dad had been frequenting for decades--Leland, Northport, Suttons Bay; the beaches at Glen Haven, at Peterson Park, at both Traverse Bay lighthouses, at Christmas Cove. We had meals at Fischers, at Dills, at the Bluebird. We stopped at Jolli-Lodge; since I'd not been there before, she gave me a little walking tour. Then she arranged with the Jolliffes for her summer vacation. But mostly we walked the beaches, Mom lost in her thoughts, me lost in mine. Dad was a beach-walker, and a collector of Petoskey Stones. He was on our minds, and in our hearts.

Dinda Family at Meijer Gardens

My sister, Debra Jean ( Preacher Debra ), my mom, Hatti, and my brother, Richard ( Kalamazoo Richard ), at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids on Mother's Day, 2000. Shot with my Nikon N90s. Since we've just decided that driving 90 miles each way in today's weather wouldn't be a good way to spend Thanksgiving, I'll not be seeing Debbie & Dick for the holiday. So I'm posting my favorite picture of them. Thanksgiving blessings, everyone.

Elsie & Hatti

My grandmother and my mother; I think this is Hardy Dam but that opinion's subject to correction. September, 1975. I believe this was Grandma Kroeger's last trip to Michigan. She grew up in Iowa, moved to Kalamazoo when she was about 40, then to San Diego a few years later. Her children settled in those places and others, so she'd occasionally tour the country to visit them. A pretty day at the dam. Roger Dinda photograph; Argus C3.

Age 42: Family

Proof--if anyone needs it--that it's possible to take an out-of-focus shot with what amounts to a box camera. Handed my Freedom 100 to then-uncle Jack, who attempted to take a family photo. Spring of 1991, on Mom's front porch. Jack and Mom's sister Violet had made a short stop in Kalamazoo on their way from somewhere to somewhere else. To bad the picture didn't work out; would have been a great shot.
