Clutter

21 Sep 2006 78
Jim Lovins had some reason for calling this photo "Joint"--but I prefer my title. Another of Jim's photographs from our Vietnam year. I've misplaced his description of this photograph, but the sense of it was that he couldn't recall the subject's name; I suspect it's Rick. Edmiston? Me--well, I like the clutter: The disparate gates, the guard tower in the near foreground, the ladders, the building, the wires, the water tower, and the tropo antennae up on the hill. Really obviously taken in the hospital compound. A terrific photograph, precisely because it violates all sorts of "rules." Pleiku, Republic of Vietnam, 1971.

Hoot

Aren't those pants something? Specialist Hoot Headrick--I remember his real name as Roland, but I wouldn't vouch for that. Most of the guys in SSDP were northerners with a couple years of college, while Hoot was a southerner (Alabama, methinks) who'd moved to DC when he'd graduated from high school and worked an office job until he was drafted. The tape deck was mine, the pinups were Hoot's. Not sure whose turntable/receiver, as those JVC jobs were real common. This, obviously, is a companion to last week's picture . BJ

Explored! #345 on Saturday, August 3, 2013. Thanks! Burnis Johnson. Looks like he was tapping his right foot to the music. BJ and I were promoted to Sergeant on the same day and shared supervisory duties on the night shift until he was cycled home (I was Trick Chief; he was Duty NCO). We (sort of) roomed together for a while, before I moved to a more private place with Alford, the alternate shift's DNCO. That's Hoot Headrick's arm, on the left side of the picture. Hoot was another of our roomies. I expect I'll put up a picture of him next week. (If you're impatient, he's also in this one .) Pleiku, Republic of Vietnam, 1971 Another, similar, photo .

Out for a Hike

Gil Wall, out exploring; taken on the outing which began with this photo and includes this one . Pleiku, RVN, 1971. Our communications center was a fairly high-tech operation for the time, and Gil was one of the folks who kept the equipment operational. Since my email address is quite public, every now and then I hear from my Vietnam colleagues. Gil and I traded a few notes about a year ago; he'd evidently found this entry in my since-abandoned weblog. He's still doing technical work, I gather; here's his website . He's living in suburban Denver, these days. Taken with my brand-new Minolta SR-T 101.
