Beal Garden

MSU's Beal Garden was kind of dramatic this morning...,

Daylilies, by the Library @ MSU

Near the Beal Garden gate . Wish my daylilies looked that good....

Gibby

Cam Gibson is MIchigan State University's left fielder--and Kirk Gibson's son. This Gibby, like his father, is great fun to watch. Photo taken at Stryker Field in Kalamazoo, where Gibson's Spartans defeated the Western Michigan Broncos by a 5-4 score. Original photo here . 98 game photographs here .

Theo Piccirilli

Back into first. Theo plays for the Western Michigan University Broncos; the first baseman is Ryan Krill of the Michigan State University Spartans. Original photo here . 588 game photographs here .

Sidearms it to First

Michigan State second baseman Kevin Goergen, yesterday afternoon at McLane Stadium. State beat the Fighting Illini, badly: 12-3. Original photo here . 674 game photos here .

MSU's Ryan Hudspeth

Warming up in the Cooley Law School Stadium bullpen before last night's Crosstown Showdown. Hudspeth didn't appear in the game. Original (slightly less bright) photo here . 953 game photos here .

A Beautiful Day for a Ballgame!

27 Apr 2013 106
Purdue Boilermakers @ Michigan State Spartans at McLane Stadium (Kobs Field) in East Lansing. Just a few days ago this ballyard was largely underwater . Hard to believe. State won by an 8-1 score. The teams meet again tomorrow, and Sunday. Original photo here . 885 game photographs (and a video!) here .

Michigan State at Western Michigan

09 May 2012 90
State's Anthony Cheky heads for second as Western's Nick Bradley pitches. Called my sister during the seventh inning: "Well, the game's like this-- Western's made 13 hits. State's made 2 errors. The Spartans are 4 runs ahead." Not exactly a pitcher's duel. More like a perpetual motion machine. Final score was Michigan State 15, Western Michigan 7. Original photo here . 557 game photos, mostly underexposed, here .

Foul!

29 Mar 2012 90
Took my new camera to the ballyard this afternoon. Experimented a bit. Solved some things. Got chilled. Nearly lost my hat to the wind. Michigan State's Ryan Jones at bat; William Arnold catching for the Central Michigan Chippewas. Aluminum bats just don't sound right.... Original photo here .

Lugnuts & Spartans

06 Apr 2011 82
Lansing versus East Lansing. Single-A versus Division I. Pros versus amateurs. (The collegians won, by the way.) Whatever. Baseball! ============ Original photo here . 35 game photos--disproportionately cheerleaders (!) and pro photographers-- here . I'll take a better camera this weekend, when they start playing for real....

M.A.C.

04 Apr 2007 88
Finally, a ball game. Michigan State ballplayer Adam Slusher, wearing a retro M.A.C. uniform (that being Michigan Agricultural College, MSU's ancestral school.) I suspect that makes him an Aggie, since the Spartan nickname dates from when the school was MSC (Michigan State College, of course). State rallied in the ninth to tighten the game to 4-3. Lansing's Lugnuts held on to win the exhibition.... More game pix here .

I Went to a Baseball Game Yesterday

10 Apr 2014 2 231
Finally. The baserunner's Western Michigan University's Grant Miller, who's beginning a dive back to first base. The pickoff attempt didn't get him. (Yeah, this is gobbledygook if you're not a baseball fan, but it's obvious if you are.) Photo taken at Michigan State's McLane Baseball Stadium, in East Lansing. The MSU Spartans beat the Broncos by an 11-3 score. Original photo (not much different) here . 466 game photos here .

Natural Science

12 Jul 2013 2 98
Since I wanted something really different for the day's photographs, I headed for the MSU campus a year ago. I don't know Michigan State's campus as well as a student would, or even an alumnus, but generally speaking I can find my way around, especially if I stay near the Circle. Parked next to the Natural Science Building on Farm Lane, then headed in the direction of Beal Garden. ========== The Natural Science Building's a sprawling, not-particularly-attractive building. I used to occasionally wander into the library in the building, researching something or other in what seems like another life. This pic's more or less from where I parked my car. ========== To the extent the trip had a specific destination, that was Beal Garden. Where I found the new-since-I-last-looked gate I photographed for 366 Snaps . ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 65 Title of " roll :" Michigan State Campus Other photos taken on 7/12/2012: The Daily Flower Census returned after a brief outage. The yard was simply awesome.

Beal Garden Tree

Beal Garden's one of my favorite Lansing-area places. A year ago I posted this one in color . ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for July 12 .

The Library

12 Jul 2013 2 89
The reason I learned MSU's campus is the school's great library, where I used to spend entire days. It's really a rather unattractive building, but if you're careful you can make it look good. I'm also posting a different crop of this photo. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for July 12 .
