Explored! #411 on Flickr [September 8, 2008, but no longer in the top 500] Thanks! Obviously, nearly everyone moved.... John O'Donnell Stadium, May 19, 2003; Centennial Bridge (and the Mississippi) in the background. West Michigan Whitecaps at Quad City River Bandits.

Got Him!

21 Jun 2005 83
The West Michigan Whitecaps get the Rockford hitter at first base in brand-spanking-new Old Kent Park in April of 1994 (probably the 17th). To all appearances the Royals have pulled off a successful sacrifice, but the 'Caps executed well on defense. I do like the way the runner kicked up the dust.... The players: #7 (third?) is Jose Guillen, #18 (catching) is Randy Ortega, and the pitcher appears to be Bob Bennett (that would be #32--Bob completed the game, lefty Tim Kubinski [#34] started). Willie Morales played first in this game (he'd be the guy ducking the throw), and the second baseman covering at first is probably Vinny Francisco. The batter/baserunner (#3) is O.J. Rhone, and the Rockford coach is likely Cliff Pastornicky. This was the third Whitecaps game I attended. South Bend's home opening day was quite crowded--there was a significant group from Grand Rapids--and Kubinski and Bennett pitched that game as well. In a far emptier ballyard the next day, these two were charting pitches in the stands; since our package seats were behind home plate, they sat in front of us for the game, and talked with the fans between pitches. One of those conversations was particularly memorable. A youngster stopped by and asked what they were doing, so they patiently explained about scoring baseball games and charting pitches. Somewhere in mid-conversation the kid realized he was talking to ballplayers, and that they were players for the Other Team. He visibly stopped to consider the situation, decided it was all right to consort with the enemy, and continued to ask questions. A neat moment at the ballpark.... Scanned from a negative. Evans, Dawson, & Sandberg

Darrell Evans bats while Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg look on during a pre-game home run derby at the 2003 Midwest League All-Star game, held at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park (near Grand Rapids), Michigan. Dawson, still remarkably fit, won the contest. No contest. ================ An odd thing about this photo: It gets lots of page views in June, as folks search for (big league) All-Star pictures and find this intriguing title in their search results. Happened last year on Dabbler's Journal; happened this year on flickr. Original photograph here .

West Michigan pitcher Josh Kauten

20 Apr 2005 112
West Michigan Whitecaps pitcher Josh Kauten balances on his front leg just after releasing the ball. Kauten's got a strong overhand motion and looked quite impressive tonight; he got the win. Very pretty pitcher. That's Jody Roughton at first base. Part of the fun of watching Kauten was watching Roughton set his defense up in parallel with Kauten's movement. The Whitecaps won by a 9-2 score. Second baseman Brooks Colvin had a great game at the plate--five hits, two doubles, three runs scored--and looked pretty impressive on the field as well. The Luggies collapsed completely in the sixth, and never recovered.

aka "Meatball"

Battle Creek Yankees pitcher Jaime Saldana pitches to Demetrius "Meatball" Heath of the West Michigan Whitecaps on April 12, 2003, at Battle Creek's C.O. Brown Stadium. The obviously-alert second baseman is Gabe Lopez. Photograph taken from Box 20, from which I've watched many a ballgame. I took hundreds of similar pictures this summer, documenting the way the BC Yanks looked on the field. Until yesterday, a sampling of those pictures was available on my other website, but I've taken them down because they were part of a failed experiment in--well, blogging. I've got a soft spot for this pic, and have saved it from the bit bucket.
