Me, in my office, on my fiftieth birthday in 1999. Things to note:
* The computer books, mostly on SQL and MSAccess. I wasn't an IT guy, but my job had geeky tendencies.
* Not sure what the critter behind my shoulder was, nor how it got there. Perhaps a birthday joke.
* Yes, I had a window office. In fact, I had this specific cubicle twice.
* All that paper. My office was always like that.
* All those pins in the pinboard.
* The Coke bottles. More often they were RC bottles.
* The mouse pad, atop a stack of papers and a clipboard, with a photo of Bay Furnace. Bay Furnace is near Christmas in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Really.
* The Baseball America Great Ballparks calendar.
* The 1999 STATS Minor League Scouting Notebook by John Sickels, on the desktop. John's books, and his email newsletters, were essential background material for my Fans Guide to the Midwest League project.
* Schedules for the Michigan Battle Cats and Lansing Lugnuts on the partition in front of the window.
Not sure who took the photo, but it was taken with my Nikon N90s. Photo scan by Seattle Filmworks.

A story you've heard before: I handed my new camera (actually, phone) to Joe Ross, and Joe took my photo. He does this.

Neat! My "most interesting" photos, as figured by Flickr & delivered by the Scout at fd's Flickr Toys . Whatever Interesting means; the more I study the daily "rankings," the less I understand them. Nonetheless, these are certainly among my best, so I'm not complaining.
Lake Michigan | Setting Sun | Farm & Trees | Cathead Beach | Cathead Bay | Upper Falls | Sturgeon Bay | Horizon
Sturgeon Light | Illinois Sky | Algorail | Color Source | Big Carp River | Fog at Bridge | Rest Stop | Flag Day

Joan took this. My hand and then-new camera were almost certainly unintended photo subjects.

And my foot.
Grand River Crossing

The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern (New York Central) line to Lansing crossed the Grand River at Dimondale. What's left of the railroad bridge shows in this photograph. Shot from the Bridge Street bridge, of course.
What this photo doesn't show is a delightful, modern house perched on the bridge footing on the northern (left, in this view) bank of the river. (Don't know if I've a photo from the late 80s which shows that house. Due to relatively recent construction on the south side, I'm unlikely to get one now.)
Camera: Minolta SR-T 101.

Joe Ross borrowed my pocket camera to shoot this portrait of me in my office. And yes, that was typical work garb for me for the last few years of my career. Even the headset, when i was working at my desk.
Age 56: Back on the Bike

Joan took this shot of me as I was getting the Old New Bike out last Saturday. Except for a short spin the night I picked it up, this was my first outing since the rebuild (illness, snow, ballgames, and mandated gym trips have interfered more than I'd have preferred).
Since Saturday I've taken the bike out a couple more times. It's everything I remembered, and everything I hoped.
One of these days I'll have to write about that outfit....

Joan took this photo of me at McLain State Park in Michigan's Copper Country; July of 1998. That's Lake Superior....

Another photo from the same vacation. That's Redridge Dam in the background. Someday I'll put up a Redridge set, but they need to be better scans than this one.

Me, receiving a silly prize for making a formal suggestion which saved my employer (and Michigan taxpayers) thousands of dollars a month; September, 1991. I thought about chopping the sign out of this image, but somehow it belongs.
On the other hand, no one should wear a shirt like that if they can't keep it tucked in straight. Oh, well.
Photo by Homer N. Smith, our bureau director. The print, like the scan, is really quite grainy. I've cropped out a lot of empty wall.
