Splish Splash!

Moving

30 May 2005 77
Today went much better. Here's Debbie's rental truck on Interstate 80 'round 'bout Joliet, Illinois, this morning. When we arrived at Debbie's new home, a dozen folks from Immanuel/Rock Falls were there to help unload. (Thanks, folks.) Richard took this photo using my camera. The low quality of the photo is partly circumstance, but mostly the camera, which has developed, well, issues.

Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge

07 Jan 2011 122
Another Duluth-Superior photo, this one of the curvy high-level bridge that carries US-2 across the harbor. This bridge replaced a similarly-curvy bridge (great pix; go, look) which was much nearer water level. Dick Bong was a WWII fighter pilot, from Poplar, Wisconsin. Bong was credited with shooting down over 40 Japanese aircraft and was considered the United States Ace of Aces . He died in an aircraft testing incident in Burbank, California, on the same day as the Hiroshima bombing. Over the years I've taken several tours of this harbor . During one of those tours the guide made quite a point about the bridge--named after a Pacific War hero and crossing the world's greatest iron-shipping harbor--being built of Japanese steel. Ah, irony.

Highway 61. Revisited.

The US-61 bridge across the Mississippi between Dubuque, Iowa, and Grant County, Wisconsin. I rather like the way all the curving roads come together for the crossing.

There's something about this farmyard I find appealing. The tiny, now-below-grade-level garage, the small-but-sprawling house, the trees, the outbuildings. Just everything, really. This photo doesn't even show the stream that runs around the yard's edge. Neat place....

Not sure exactly where I shot this, but I like the little hollow, the wandering country road, and the barn.

A Hazy Morning

18 Apr 2014 2 163
Same location and camera as this morning's Commuters , but a couple minutes earlier and with a different lens. Seems worth extending the recent discussion about my slightly-fisheyed porch photo : Did anyone think of this morning's image as distorted? I can remember a time I would have, but that time was half a century ago. These days I mostly don't notice that sort of foreshortening....

The International Bridges

Sault Bridges

19 Nov 2005 113
Another view of the pair of bridges which connect the two Saults. The high bridge carries I-75 to Canada and was opened in the early 1960s; the lift bridge was constructed by the MSP&SSM (the Soo Line's most direct predecessor) in the nineteenth century. The lift is normally up; it comes down only when there's a train crossing the river. I caught this while the bridge was descending, then hurried over to catch a close view of the train. Shot with my Minolta Freedom 100 in, I think, 1990.

Michigan Highway 43 (M-43)

More of this morning's snow. This is M-43 (see the sign-- nobody calls this anything else), right where you'd turn to get to my house.

Bridges

The highway bridge, the rail bridge, and the bridge of the (ship) St. Clair; Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on Engineers Day, 2005. This is a technically dreadful picture--I shot it though the windshield, from the passenger side--but the composition's interesting enough that I thought I'd share it. Seem to be doing that a lot this week.

Hello Mulliken

28 Aug 2013 2 91
This photo could be considered a rehearsal for my November 12 366 Snaps pic . This is Mulliken from M-43, shot more or less from the cemetery entrance. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for August 27 .

Power Fix, M43

28 Aug 2013 1 90
Eventually you go stir crazy. Sundays I generally buy my RC Cola in Sunfield, since Marco's opens earlier than Mulliken's Thriftway. Last August 26 I headed south from Sunfield and returned to Mulliken on back roads. For the next few months my 366 Snaps photographs were generally images caught on the local country roads; I'd grown weary of flowers and birds. This photo's quality's compromised by haze, and because I'd pointed the lens toward the sun. ========== I originally titled the daily photo "Horse Farm," which drew a response from WindsorDi complaining about the lack of horses. And while it's true there were no horses, the title was accurate; the Bonleys raise horses, and their farm looks like no other in the neighborhood. But I changed the title to "Bonley Farm." Regardless, I was real pleased with the way the Bonley Farm photograph captured depth in their back 40. I understand why Di's left Flickr, but I miss her. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 11 Title of " roll :" Between Sunfield & Mulliken Other photos taken on 8/26/2012: none.
