Ambassador Bridge

30 Mar 2006 93
Detroit's waterfront, May 28, 1990. The more I look at this photo, the better I like it. Every Memorial Day weekend, the Marine Historical Society of Detroit sponsors a tour from Detroit to Port Huron and back. The 1990 tour used both Bob Lo boats, and both were fully loaded. This photo was taken from the bow of St. Clair just as the tour began. Or mebbe from Columbia's bow. It's been a long time.... ================== Now, with both big boats inactive (I did not say retired), MHSD's tour necessarily uses smaller boats....

James Davidson

"Sunday August 2 1964 S.S. James Davidson passing Bob Lo Steamer Columbia in Detroit River" So Rick's dad also took photo excursions on the Bob Lo boats .... James Davidson was a Lakes captain, the founder of Bay City's largest shipyard , and financier for son-in-law G.A. Tomlinson, who founded the Tomlinson Fleet. This ship belonged to the Tomlinson Fleet in 1964 but seems to have been wearing Buckeye colors, one of the companies which operated her in later life. She was apparently retired when the remnant of the fleet was sold off in 1971. Borucki's Lakers

Myron C. Taylor

"Sunday September 12 1965 SS. Munson [sic] of Limestone fleet upbound [downbound] under Ambassador Bridge Detroit-Windsor boundary on Bridge" While Mr. Borucki's label believes this to be the John C. Munson, it's pretty clearly the Taylor (now sailing as the Calumet). My thanks to the nameless flickr commenter for the correction. Borucki's Lakers

Scott Misener

"Canadian SS Scott Misener upbound off Bob Lo Island Amherstburg channel Saturday August 1963" Scott Misener was the founder of the fleet which bore his name. There were several ships named after him; this appears to be the third of those, built in the early 1950s. Borucki's Lakers

Joliet

"Sunday August 3, 1941 Steamer Joliet aproaching the Ambassador Bridge Detroit, Mich" A Cleveland Cliffs carrier. Built by American Shipbuilding at Lorain in 1916 as the Herbert F. Black; renamed to Joliet in 1930. Scrapped 1963. An earlier Joliet was part of the Pittsburgh fleet; there's a current Joliet operated by Star Lines between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. Turntable

"Sunday, August 13, 1939 Train on turntable ready to go in roundhouse Detroit, Mich Taken off from Ambassador Bridge" A little something for the railfans, today. In the near foreground is a bit of the Pere Marquette's enormous roundhouse, and off beyond the turntable is just a wee piece of PM's also-enormous riverfront yard. I rather like the bridge shadow on the roof and tracks. The bridge was about a decade old when this photo was taken. The roundhouse, which predated the bridge, is long gone, now. The still-large yard is just a shadow of its former self. Borucki's Lakers

Greater Buffalo

"August 4, 1939 St[eamer] Greater Buffalo heading toward Lake Erie on Detroit River" Second of two; I discussed this passenger ship's career in great detail a few weeks ago . This wonderful photograph is almost like a painting. Notice the Ambassador Bridge in the background. I've trimmed some sky and water to move the focus to the ship. Borucki's Lakers
