A Superior Sky

06 Feb 2011 92
Lake Superior, on the Keweenaw Peninsula, near Betsy. I'm now using a version of this photo as the header on A Dabbler's Journal . Took this in 2000 with my Nikon N90s.

Champion Mine

Shaft 4's rockhouse in the foreground, with the machine shop back behind. An abandoned (since 1967) underground copper operation at Painesdale, Michigan, later the local waterworks. Quite well preserved, considering, but in constant danger of deterioration. Anyone know whether they're still trying to turn the site into a museum? The PM&S website doesn't exactly look dead, but there's been no recent maintenance.

Portage Entry Light

21 Mar 2006 79
The Keweenaw Peninsula--Michigan's Copper Country--is split by Portage Lake. One of the engineering accomplishments of Lake Superior's mining companies was opening the western entrance to the passage and making it possible for ships to cross the peninsula, rather than go around; this was a considerable saving in time and an increase in safety for the shippers. Three decades or so ago the ships outgrew this channel, and modern navigational practices improved the safety of the route around the peninsula. You occasionally see a pleasure boat at this entrance, and the Parks Service ship Ranger III, but it's no longer a shipping route. This light, which marks the boundary of McLain State Park, also marks the entrance to the Portage passage.

Silver River Falls

Near Eagle Harbor, extreme northern Michigan. Considering that the falls are accessible from the highway, that there are always photographers wandering around the place, and the the falls and bridge are quite picturesque, there are really very few photos of the place on the web....

Calumet

The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company built a substantial complex of buildings around the Red Jacket and their other mines early in the twentieth century. Those buildings, now the heart of the Keweenaw National Historical Park , are a truly impressive monument to the miners who toiled far beneath the surface in what was then the planet's deepest mine. This building, according to the site's map (available at the park but not on their website), was the Drill Shop.
