At the Ballpark

21 Jan 2007 114
Dick tells me that Sharon , a longtime family friend, passed away on Friday. Photo taken at Battle Creek's C.O. Brown Stadium. Original photograph here . Somewhere I've got a photograph of Bielby at a bluegrass festival; we'll have to see if I can find it.

National Anthem

29 Aug 2007 120
Members of Lansing's Capitol City Chordsmen perform the Star Spangled Banner before last night's baseball game at Oldsmobile Park. The Lugnuts beat the Loons by a 7-4 score. Original photo here . Game photos here .

Fingertips

10 Apr 2008 63
Another sign of spring... Lansing's Edgar Estanga, pitching in relief last night at Oldsmobile Park. This photo's pretty noisy because I had the camera settings' messed up for a few minutes. Nonetheless, I like. Original photo here . More game photos here .

Dive!

10 Sep 2007 102
West Michigan shortstop Audy Ciriaco. Likely my best baseball picture of the summer. Original here . More game photos here . The Whitecaps begin the Midwest League Championship Round against Beloit tomorrow night.

Four Wizards

17 Aug 2007 171
Fort Wayne pitchers Derek McDaid, Jake Ociesa, Stevie Delabar, and pitching coach Wally Whitehurst before the game... Original photo here . Game photos here .

Back to Second. Now!

31 Jul 2007 130
Peoria Chiefs third basemen Ryne Malone (hmm: a guy named after his manager , I expect) unleashes a throw which will get hitter Jordan Newton at first base. That's Peoria's Nate Samson covering second, and West Michigan's Ryan Strieby hustling back to the base. Another version of this photo here . More game photos here .

He Swings!

03 Jul 2007 90
Lansing Lugnuts third baseman Josh Bell--not to be mistaken for Great Lakes Loons 3B JB--follows through at West Michigan's Fifth Third Ballpark. The catcher's Louis Ott (normally an infielder); the ump is Takeshi Hirabayashi. Original photo here . More game photos here .

Dow Diamond

24 Apr 2007 123
Home of the Midwest League's Great Lakes Loons; Midland, Michigan. A gem. More pix here .

Autograph Area

19 Jul 2007 122
Pitcher Zach Piccola of the West Michigan Whitecaps. Zach was signing autographs, bantering with the crowd, and watching Duane Below, the starting pitcher, warm up pretty much simultaneously. Looked to be enjoying himself. He'd eventually relieve Below in mid-game. That's Whitecaps pitching coach Ray Burris behind him. Original photo here . More game pictures here .

Potential Blue Jays

13 Jun 2007 121
Dayton at Lansing, 6/12/2007. Lansing pitcher Julio Pinto, with second baseman Scott Campbell in the background. The Dragons won by a 10-6 score. Original photo here . More game photos here .

M.A.C.

04 Apr 2007 88
Finally, a ball game. Michigan State ballplayer Adam Slusher, wearing a retro M.A.C. uniform (that being Michigan Agricultural College, MSU's ancestral school.) I suspect that makes him an Aggie, since the Spartan nickname dates from when the school was MSC (Michigan State College, of course). State rallied in the ninth to tighten the game to 4-3. Lansing's Lugnuts held on to win the exhibition.... More game pix here .

Tommy

10 Apr 2007 99
Tom Brookens, infielder for the 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers , is now managing the West Michigan Whitecaps. The 'Caps played their home opener last night, losing to Lansing. It was cold . More photos from the game here . A few more photographs of Brookens here . My website's Brookens page here .

4/26/2003

04 Mar 2007 150
Fort Wayne at Battle Creek. BC Yankee infielder Juan Camacho has just swung at a Jon Huber pitch; the other visible players are catcher Andres Pagan and second baseman Brian Burgamy. Original photo here . Among the many things I'll miss, now that the Battle Creek franchise has left town, is the view from this seat. My West Michigan tickets arrived on Friday, along with a note telling that Lansing's tix will be available on March 15. The season begins April 5. I'm getting antsy....

Impatient for Baseball

28 Jan 2007 92
West Michigan infielders Nick McIntyre and Brent Dlugach, plus an unknown Quad Cities baserunner, waiting for action to begin at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan. I've been working hard on mwlguide.com/ for the past month, trying to catch up a couple years' neglect. Yesterday I rebuilt the site's front page, and used a version of this photograph. About 9 weeks to minor league Opening Day....

Fun with Baseballs

30 Aug 2006 70
A Beloit Snappers ballplayer--I think this is Tarrence Patterson--at play during pregame warmups. Taken at CO Brown Stadium in Battle Creek, Michigan. Original photo here . More photos from this game here .

Sellers Steals Second

02 Aug 2006 65
Midwest League action, 8/1/2006. Jason Sellers of Kane County slides into second. That's Southwest Michigan's Jason St. Clair in the air, and pitcher Greg Dupas has ducked the catcher's throw. Umpire Jason Alper's on the spot. CO Brown Stadium, Battle Creek, Michigan. Yeah, it's out of focus. The picture just sorta happened while I was photographing Dupas. The poor light didn't help, either. Original, unprocessed picture here . More game photos here .

Midwest League Action

13 Jul 2006 57
Southwest Michigan hitter Jason St. Clair puts the ball in play, and Wisconsin's catcher (Travis Scott), second baseman (Ron Garth), and pitcher (Nick Allen) all react. Umpire De'Andre Anderson begins to move to where he anticipates the next play. Photo taken at Battle Creek, Michigan; C.O. Brown Stadium, on July 5. The Wisconsin team is based in Appleton. Original photograph here . More game photos here .

Out at Home

12 May 2006 80
Southwest Michigan catcher Alex Jamieson tags incoming Cedar Rapids baserunner Flint Wipke in the first inning of a game at Battle Creek on April 21, 2006. Wipke's trying to score from second on Mark Trumbo's single to left; Pat Reilly's already scored on the hit, and on deck batter Warner Madrigal's urging Wipke to slide. ============= The strange effects partly resulted from a mis-setting, as the (Chinon Genesis) camera didn't realize I'd installed the lens extender. Over the years, I've done that a lot. In this case, though, we can blame the camera; I was fighting to get it to hold its settings, and by game's end the camera had completely failed. I'm reasonably sure the second roll I took at the game will be the last for this camera. Sad, but not that sad. The camera served me well for a number of years, but I've got far better equipment. As I've discussed before , it took good pictures but wasn't the right camera for this photographer. The original scan , and the rest of the roll , are on the MWLguide photo stream .
