Near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Looks like they could easily put the mine back into production, but that's likely an oversimplification. Taken on an excursion with the Missabe Railroad Historical Society.

Needmore

Andrew Nickle, a native of Ireland, made the first government land purchase here in 1837, but while he went to get his family, Orrin Rowland and Henry Clark became the first actual settlers; William Crother lived here with Roxana, believed to be his wife; her son-in-law had Crother sued for bigamy and won; while her lawyer, Edward Bradley, was a state senator, the townspeople had him petition that the town be named Roxana; the enrolling clerk made the final "a" look more like a "d" and the name became Roxand; but its post office, opened on Dec. 31, 1849, with John Ewing as its first postmaster, was spelled Roxana; the office operated until March 31, 1903; the village was also called Needmore and is on some maps as such. That run-on sentence from Michigan Place Names by Walter Romig. Who says history can't be fun? ---------- The photograph shows what used to be Larry's Body Shop at the corner of Wheaton and Needmore, which is to say in Needmore . As the quotation indicates, Needmore's been settled since the 1830s.

Somewhere in Illinois. When we travel, Joan drives and I shoot pictures. She claims the "shoot pictures" part is pretty annoying.

Barn, with farmer

South of Dixon, Illinois. I kinda like the distant silos, off on the horizon.

Best LARGE! DMIR 307, ready to push around a string of ore jennies at Two Harbors yard in August of 1990. She attracted a bunch of folks with cameras; I see seven, not counting m'self and anyone else who was up on the hill with me. Camera: Minolta Freedom 100

I tend to vacation in mining areas.... Cliffs Shaft Mine, in Ishpeming, was perhaps the most important of all Michigan iron mines. There were a few mines which shipped more ore, but this was the first great Marquette Range mine, and it was an important producer for decades. Now a museum, and definitely worth the stop. Our guide was a retired Cleveland Cliffs engineer, and most informative. To me, the most interesting thing he said was that he doesn't believe the Negaunee/Ishpeming mines will ever reopen, despite significant remaining deep-underground deposits, because the economics seem unlikely ever to justify the effort. I've heard other opinions from apparently-knowledgable people, but this guy seemed to have impeccable credentials.

I didn't really have an idea for a 366 Snaps photo a year ago. Off on my usual Friday eat breakfast and run errands excursion, I was pleased to find these combines parked about a mile from my house. I'm not a farmer, but I love the big equipment the farmers use to make their livings. I may have mentioned this before . ========== Figured I'd post one of these last November 9, but when I returned home I found a tree trimmer working across the street, and went with a photo of that project. Later I recovered the color on a photo of the cat , and posted that as well.... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 17 Title of " roll :" Taffy - Harvesters - Tree Trim Other photos taken on 11/9/2012: none.
