Doors & (blocked) Windows

And shake shingles! Another Springport photo.... This appears to be part of the Love's Sawmill complex, though this building does not show in any of the other pix. Wonderful old place, regardless. Camera: Minolta Freedom 100; 1988.

After Dark

Pleiku, Republic of Vietnam, 1971. The near door is Ward 1 of the 71st Evacuation Hospital. The ward was being used as a barracks by the time I arrived, and is where I lived for most of my tour. The entry to Ward 2, also a barracks housing our operation, is at the other light. As you can see, the place wasn't really well-lit. Steve Streeper left me a note a few weeks back remarking on all the weeds which grew up after the medicos ceded the buildings to us signal folks. You can see some of those weeds growing atop the blast wall (which protected the building from stray 122 rockets). When I arrived, merely six months after Steve left, the weeds had already taken possession of the place....

Barn, Sebewa

31 Oct 2013 2 114
I told you some of the day's pix were oddly composed! This barn's in "downtown" Sebewa, on Musgrove just west of Keefer. The various textures, here, gave me an excuse to play with my processing tools; different tools bring out different details. I like this version best.... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for October 31 .

Doors

While all photographs can be interpreted as experiments with light, some photographs are explicitly that. A year ago the sun was pouring into my otherwise-dark living room, tempting me to capture the resulting contrasts. ========== The Doors photo, above, is of our entryway. Really I've nothing more to say about it. The map I photographed and posted to 366 Snaps a year ago was purchased in Traverse City from a nautically-themed art gallery which later moved to Harbor Springs. I still miss the TC incarnation. Joan's mom grew up around Lake Charlevoix, so we've ties to the area. ========== This photograph is a non-outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Escapism

Mulliken's founding story-- I sketched it in yesterday's commentary --includes a claim that the Masonic Temple was moved to our town from Hoytville. These days the temple's an unattractive, nearly windowless hulk that's downtown's largest building. But I find its fire escape a tempting photographic target, and you'll see it again in the project outtakes. Eventually I just decided the escape would be the last 366 Snaps photo . And so it was. ========== Last March 8's photos were all shot from Mulliken's downtown park. It's an interesting set, as I was playing with depth of focus, framing, and camera angles using a really capable camera/lens combination. A couple ideas would eventually find their way into the daily project, but most were failures. In the end, I went with a novelty shot of the signs in the recycling center. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . I'm skeptical. A friend who grew up north of town tells me that before they wrapped the temple in aluminum it was an attractive place. I believe her.
