Christmas Tree Train

Erie Mining

Near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. From a Missabe Railroad Historical Society convention fan trip, in 2006.

Something about that paint scheme.... A GE D9-44CW (Dash-9, which is sort of a generation indicator; 4400 HP, 6-wheel trucks, wide cab). I see that the original paint job on this unit was famously bad . Better, now, but needs a bath. This big feller was parked where I work--State of Michigan Secondary Complex, near Dimondale--on the old Grand Trunk mainline's passing track. Even a decade ago the only "foreign" paint we'd see on GT was CN, which hardly counts, and an occasional IC; nowadays we see virtually everything. Far from ideal shooting conditions, as you can perhaps tell, but I couldn't resist the opportunity. Just a gorgeous loco.

I'm playing with Aperture, and with Connected Flow's FlickrExport add-in to the product.... Taken at Cliffs-Erie (Erie Mine), Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, in August of 2006. Part of an excursion with the Missabe Railroad Historical Society. Explored! #417 on Sunday, July 29, 2007. Thanks!

Explored! #184 on Friday, January 18, 2008. Thanks! Both the taconite processing plant and the F9 (Covered Wagon) are apparently functional, but unused, near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. This photo posted just to make my brother jealous.... We're back from vacation. More tomorrow.

Number 215

Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range locomotive 215, an EMD SD-38-2 acquired from sister road Bessemer and Lake Erie in 1980. Apparently this locomotive ran around in the Bessemer's orange paint scheme for quite a while, since it was nicknamed "The Pumpkin." By 1990, when this photo was taken, it was in Missabe's standard livery. I just love that paint job. It takes a hefty locomotive to control a train of iron ore moving down the hill to Duluth or Two Harbors, so the DMIR employed EMD SDs. The details changed over time, though the SD-9s and SD-18s lasted pretty much forever. The six-wheel power trucks were an important part of the road's identity, back before they became common on modern motive power. That's our friend 312 on the left.

Dirt Hauler

That's what Missabe did. Folks call the dirt "ore," but it's dirt all the same. Still what they haul, actually, but now they're a division of CN. Locomotive 312 , again; up close and personal. Shot with m' Freedom 100; 1990 at Two Harbors, Minnesota.

Soo Line 6024

Downtown Lansing, next to Clara's restaurant (the former Pere Marquette Depot). Shot this through my windshield, which shows.... 6024 is an SD60 built in 1989; now part of the Canadian Pacific fleet. Looks pretty worn.

Cog Railway

A locomotive named Kro Flite, nearly hidden in the fog at the top of New Hampshire's Mount Washington Cog Railway, in July of 2002. I posted a similar photo several months ago; this one has more detail for the loco. Camera: Nikon N90s

WC 582

01 Nov 2005 163
Wisconsin Central 582 returns to the United States on the International Rail Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, sometime in August of 1990. The high bridge is the other, now more famous, International Bridge between the Twin Saults. I was disappointed with this photo when I got the print back; it's a little blurry, the angle's odd, and the crewman's not really visible. Like it better, now....

Love that Wisconsin Central livery

01 Nov 2005 122
Same loco, same train, same bridges: Wisconsin Central 582 at Sault Ste. Marie in August, 1990. Both bridges cross the Saint Marys River to Canada, above the falls and the locks. 582 was built by GM's Electromotive Division as a "Light" SD39--a power source intended for locations with weight limits; apparently the only customer for these units was the Milwaukee Road. When the Soo Line absorbed the Milwaukee, they " blackbearded " this one, then passed it to WC when the Lake States Division was spun off. Apparently this loco and its kindern had the same numbers on all three roads. While the long railroad bridge between the Saults was an engineering marvel when it was constructed in 1887, when WC was formed it was a century old . An ideal use for this (relatively) lightweight loco. Told you before: I'm a reformed railfan. It's an addiction. Like all addictions, there's always some danger of a relapse.

Soo 2010

Soo Line couldn't be bothered to fully repaint the Milwaukee Road locos they acquired in their 1987 merger. So they just splashed black paint over the MILW identifiers and added their own. The result was ugly back then--nearly three decades ago, now--and it's still ugly. ( Here's a 1987 photo , with the "bandit" paintjob fresh.) As you can see, CP hasn't repainted this one, either. Downtown DeForest, Wisconsin.
