That's a golf course (Sunfield's Centennial Acres) on the left.
Somehow I lived a couple miles from this road for about 20 years without noticing it.
Well, I know it's there now.

I pass this view every time I drive to Kalamazoo and have been promising myself I'd catch it in a photo. So today I stopped.

Into the Amish Settlement

My plan, a year ago, was to get that Amish picture I'd missed a few days earlier . Headed down Mulliken Road to Gresham Highway, turned the corner (and shot this picture right at the Gresham church), and headed into Amish territory.
Found kids all over the place, heading for the Amish school. On foot, on bikes, in carriages, even a few on a cute little two-wheeled rig I don't know the words to describe. But they weren't at school yet, and shooting pix of moving Amish kids from my moving car really wasn't what I wanted to do. So I took other photographs.
==========
For 366 Snaps I posted a photo of a couple failing barns further down Gresham, well on the way to Vermontville. (Much to my surprise, Flickr contact Aunt Owwee found them familiar .) That farm's within the Amish colony and may or may not be Amish; regardless, it's not the obviously Amish photo I had in mind. But I rather like it.
==========
The day's 366 Snaps photos were, let us say, hurried--framed well, but poorly executed. While I'd remembered how to take pix with the FujiFilm F10, I'd not yet adapted to its pace.
The Finepix F10's the best-designed compact camera I've owned, digital or film--but it's an old design. Old as in: A 6 megapixel sensor, a 3x zoom telephoto lens, and a slow focusing system. These didn't bother me when I used an F10 as an everyday camera, but returning to it after using more capable cameras was surprisingly painful.
I rather expected this. You may have noticed I began practicing with the camera in mid-November. But still it took me longer to adjust than I planned, and the project suffered a bit for that.
By the end of the month I was working comfortably with the little box, though, and used it as my pocket cam until it completely failed in February.

Loucks School Road

My photographic mission for the day, a year ago, was to find a combine harvester out tearing up a wheat field. I didn't exactly succeed, but found a fully satisfactory photo of a combine surrounded by large trucks at the edge of a partially-digested field (see below).
The farm's on Needmore Highway, and I parked at the corner of Loucks School Road to take the picture. Since I was already on Loucks, I headed up toward the old school.
This photo's through my windshield, just a few hundred feet up from the other but looking north instead of west....
==========
I also posted the wheat field photo on Facebook, where it generated some perhaps-entertaining interplay.
* High school friend, longtime Florida resident: "Where is this? Surely looks like home."
* Me: "Eaton County, at Needmore and Loucks--a place only [former coworker] would recognize. Pretty much nowhere"
* Former Coworker: "Yep, pretty much nowhere. That road wasn't paved when I lived out that way."

Approaching Hoytville

We're approaching the hamlet on Saginaw Highway (yeah, it turns to dirt out here), from the east. I'd take and post a similar photo to this on March 3--similar, but quite a different treatment.
I rather like the depth this photo shows....

Joan was ill and stayed home last February 6, so I didn't wander far from the house. I played a lot with the camera/phone's settings, using the cats as photo subjects. I then drove a bit around the immediate area and continued experimenting. Subjects included another of the Spitzley farms and a short tour of Hoytville. The results were pretty good, overall, and I'd try several of the shots again.
My fave of the day's photos, by far, was of Joan and Oreo, reading.
