Red-Bellied Woodpecker

12 Nov 2014 1 287
Although this fella's often around, he generally prefers to peck at our most distant suet cake. So when he came and chased a Blue Jay off the pedestal feeder I grabbed the camera. Dull light today. But sometimes you just gotta.

Across the Grand

Opinion: This photo looks pretty good at every resolution; I'm rather pleased with it. We walked the Ledges Trail in Grand Ledge this afternoon. The light was excellent, the other walkers we encountered were interesting, and the hike was delightful. ============== I've photographed this dock before; for instance, here's the same place . There's something about this platform--it's directly across from the stairway at Fitzgerald Park--that always gets my attention.

Red-Breasted Nuthatch

15 Jan 2013 97
Not entirely certain whether to cheer because I finally got a passable photograph of this bird, or to groan because the pic's not quite in proper focus.... Looked out the window to see this guy perched on the feeder's hook and looking back at me. Figured it would be an opportunity to play some more with the Nikon 1 V1/Minolta 75-200 zoom setup. Since the other Nuthatches, several Cardinals, the Chickadees, and the Tufted Titmice were all in attendance, it seemed likely I could get something I liked. Yup, I did. But (as you can see) I need to work on focus issues. Particularly with this bird, who never sits long in any one place. I did get some better photos, but not of this fellow. They'll be along presently, with some more commentary about the camera/lens combination.

I'm not entirely pleased with this photo, but was delighted to find the bird on our pedestal feeder. (& no, the name doesn't seem to make sense.) Same bird, better picture.

A White Crowned Sparrow on the Platform Feeder

06 May 2012 101
If you live most anywhere on the North American continent, the White-Crowned Sparrow is a fairly common bird for either the winter or summer. If you live most places on the west coast, they're resident all year round. Where I live, they show up for a few days each spring, and are special.

The New Viewing Platform

From MacArthur Lock, aboard the Soo tour boat Nokomis . The tower's attractive from this side, too. This view shows all the glass, which will bother serious photographers (but help control the cold, which is worthwhile). At least they left most of the upper platform open.

Who? Me?

We call this cat Boots, not knowing his actual name. He lives a couple yards over, and is at perpetual war with the cat I showed you a couple days back . ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for October 14 .

A Chipping Sparrow on our Pedestal Feeder

11 May 2013 2 116
Flickr member cminer52 's among my favorite bird photographers. Gary often photographs songbirds on a stump he's repurposed as a feeder . Joan, knowing I was jealous, suggested we make our own stump--so we did so, using an old birdbath base for a pedestal and balancing a broken stepping-stone atop it. All in all, it's worked out pretty well. ========== A year ago my 366 Snaps photo was of a Starling at one of the feeders. Turns out you can't feed the birds you want without attracting Starlings. At least around here. A price I'm willing to pay, I must say. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 91 Title of " roll :" Birds at Feeders Other photos taken on 5/11/2012: I labelled the folder "Daily Flower Census and Birds." It's got a few images of our Columbine, but it's also mostly birds on the pedestal feeder.

Same bird as the day's other outtake, photographed within a few seconds of the other photo, but this picture's processed differently. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion for May 11 .

White-Crowned Sparrow on the Platform

06 May 2013 1 73
Promised you another White-Crown! ========== A DSLR will let you bang out a lot of photographs quickly. For 366 Snaps a year ago I took 156 photographs, total, of two birds. The whole effort, shot through my office window, took me less than three minutes. Then I spent a lot more time figuring out which of many quite-similar photographs I liked best, so I could post that one. Quite a contrast from the previous day's effort , actually. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 156 Title of " roll :" White-Crowned Sparrow [I apparently ignored the blackbird] Other photos taken on 5/6/2012: The Daily Flower Census--30 rather arty pix with the Nikon 1--found the tulips fading and a newly opened flowering quince (just like this year, for yesterday). I also shot a handful of cat pix--ours, and the neighbors'.
