Eagle!

14 Dec 2013 2 2 318
Sometimes the 366 Snaps shots were planned, and sometimes they just kind of happened. A year ago, things were somewhere between.

I ate breakfast in Grand Ledge last December 14, and was sitting in Sophia's considering where I might take the daily photo. This led to a short inventory of the local small towns. Eagle, I thought. I haven't visited Eagle!

Eagle's the oldest of the near-by settlements, on the Grand River road. It's really quite close to Mulliken, but there's a river in the way and getting from one to the other is a bit of a pain. Like Mulliken, it's historically a grain elevator town, but the elevator's out of business. The town's most notable, though, for its tiny fairground. I thought I might get a photo of that. Got in the car, clicked a neat photo of the GL elevator , and headed for Eagle.

I did take a few fairground pix, but found some more interesting photographs....

==========

Within my memory there was a sidetrack to the Eagle elevator, but like most of the local seed and grain operations it's been superceded by larger competitors--and the tracks have long-since been pulled up.

The silo still looks rather nice in silhouette, methinks. The 366 Snaps shot was of Swampers store, which is across the road from both the town's bar and the fairground. And, in its way, a classic.... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 20 Title of " roll :" Eagle & thereabouts Other photos taken on 12/14/2012: I was running an errand in the afternoon and noticed there was a large fire happening--well, somewhere. Since I wanted to get the errand run, I avoided the location, but by the time I'd reached my destination I knew pretty well where the fire was. Completing my errand, I headed for the fire site, and caught a few pix .

Barn, Eaton Highway

I mentioned in this morning's commentary that I got some good pix a year ago along Eaton Highway. This is one of those.

Corn Under Clouds

A couple miles south of Mulliken, Michigan; shot from what's probably my most common photo location.

McCargar's Barn

22 Oct 2014 4 385
Took a roundabout route home this morning and discovered that two barns I've long admired have gone missing. This one's long been a favorite photographic subject. I've previously explained its history , and shan't repeat that here. I will say that John McCargar was the first white settler in Roxand Township. Gonna miss the old barn. This is how it looked last June.

Farm

This farm's on M-66, north of Assyria (Michigan) and east of Lacey (neither of which are particularly real, these days); I took the photo from Lacey Road.

Farmyard

Showed you this farmyard a couple weeks back . This was taken at the same time, but it's 'bout a half-mile down the road.

My Favorite Silo

It's constructed like a very large wooden barrel. South of Hastings on M-43.

This farmyard's about a mile from the barn in the earlier photograph .

Now Gone

12 May 2012 132
I've shown you that shed once or twice (five times? I think so) over the years. I always figured I'd get back and take a better picture of that barn , which I pass two or three times weekly. That's not gonna happen, as they knocked the remnants down this week. Can't say I blame 'em, since it's an obviously hazardous place in what's become a residential neighborhood. But I'm sad to see it go. And I regret that I didn't get that picture; there was a fine one waiting to be captured.

A Buttressed Barn

03 Dec 2010 135
Yesterday's cattle live in this structure. Or lived, I suppose, since both photos were taken nearly five years ago. This pic comes from the same early-2006 roll of film. I call this the "McCargar Barn" because they owned the property in 1896, which I learned from an old plat map. There was a long-abandoned house just up the hill from here--it would probably show at the extreme left in this photo--but since Joan doesn't recall it, it was gone by 1995. Before the current(?) owners added those impressive buttresses, it looked to be only a matter of weeks until the wall fell outward, taking the barn down with it. Glad they saved the place, but the setup still looks decidedly makeshift. Another, color, photo of the same barn , taken a few weeks before. With cows.

Storage

Most days, I pass this farm--more than a "family farm," but less than a large corporate enterprise--on my way to work.

Stone Silo

Near Madison, Wisconsin; shot from the car. There's actually a business on this farm named "Stone Silo," but I didn't know that when I shot the photo....

The New Era Silo

05 Mar 2014 12 5 410
When I was young these silos were all over Michigan. I'm pretty sure this is the only well-maintained survivor. It's east of Portland on the Grand River Road. Most of those wires and cables are relatively new. The power company guys clearly weren't photographers.
