Cory Yard

06 Dec 2014 3 237
Near Dimondale, Michigan. As you might guess from the auto racks parked on the tracks, this yard pretty much exclusively serves a General Motors final assembly plant. It's also within an easy walk of my former workplace.

Rail Fence

One last photo from our 1990 visit to Soudan Mine Underground State Park in Tower, Minnesota.

Loader

01 Jun 2006 88
A very different view of the loader at Soudan Mine Underground State Park, Tower, Minnesota. The Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range railroad line ran beneath this structure; these tracks moved the ore from the crusher to the loader. Really a marvelous artifact. Photo taken in 1990 with a Minolta Freedom 100.

Best LARGE! DMIR 307, ready to push around a string of ore jennies at Two Harbors yard in August of 1990. She attracted a bunch of folks with cameras; I see seven, not counting m'self and anyone else who was up on the hill with me. Camera: Minolta Freedom 100

WC 582

01 Nov 2005 163
Wisconsin Central 582 returns to the United States on the International Rail Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, sometime in August of 1990. The high bridge is the other, now more famous, International Bridge between the Twin Saults. I was disappointed with this photo when I got the print back; it's a little blurry, the angle's odd, and the crewman's not really visible. Like it better, now....

Tracks to the Horizon

Rails, of course: The Pere Marquette mainline from Mulliken, Michigan. Long since part of the Chessie system, and now also in regular use by Canadian Pacific

Right of Way

16 Feb 2006 93
Another R-O-W ! The Pere Marquette Railroad laid its rails to Lansing a decade after the LS&MS , in 1888. One result of that tracklaying project was my town, Mulliken. As you can see, this line is still in operation; it's owned by CSX, with lots of Canadian Pacific traffic via Soo Line trackage rights (I like these complications). We haven't really had a lot of snow this season, but it's been quite grey much of the time. This photo was taken from behind the Mulliken Post Office; I was facing east, with the empty grain silos just out of the picture to the right.

Fence

I had a couple ideas for a 366 Snaps photograph a year ago, one of which was this photo, but wasn't satisfied with them. So I photographed some birds at the feeders, and pretty much accidentally found the cat photo I used for the project photo. I've long wondered about this fence, which is near the corner of Grand Ledge Highway and Dow Road, a couple miles west of Mulliken. I quite sure there's never been a house here--the place has always been quite swampy, and there's a creek/drain just out of the photo--but someone needed to contain something. Oh, well. I'm sure it made sense to them. A canvas shelter in the background.... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 18 & 63 Title of " roll :" Downtown Mulliken, mostly & Birds Other photos taken on 11/3/2012: More bird pics , with the big camera. 267 of 'em.

The House Across the Tracks

13 Mar 2013 2 91
Mulliken's North Street has two side-by-side Georgian homes that aren't like any other house in town. I've always wondered who built them. That fence prevented this from being my daily pic. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion for March 13 here .
