Reflection

Pretty sure I took this photo in Moultenborough, New Hampshire, at The Loon Center . If that is correct, this is a little corner of Lake Winnipesaukee. Very pretty. In many ways this stop was the highlight of our 2000 New Hampshire vacation.

We generally head north for Joan's birthday. We've stayed in several towns over the years but Traverse City's been our usual landing place. By late September the bay's sails have mostly taken shelter, but the town's still host to many tourists. This view, from last fall's excursion, is from the Holiday Inn's waterfront. It captures much of what we like about Traverse City, and about northern Michigan in general.

The House on the Hill, with fudge

Shot across Traverse Bay on my birthday last winter. Sometime this evening the counter on my photo stream will top 100,000. Thanks to everyone who stops by. I'm grateful for the attention. Explored! [#447 on Friday, August 17, 2007.] Thanks! (No longer in the top 500.)

The Hill around the Mine

Best LARGE . The Cliffs-Erie complex, near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Technically, this is a photograph of Hinsdale, a named place on the railroad, but apparently never a settlement. The mine built this hill/tailings pile to raise the railroad to a useful height at the large processing plant . But then they needed a grade-level railroad entry, so they built a tunnel through the hill. That didn't work satisfactorily, so they ripped everything out and replaced the tunnel with this overpass. The remains of the tunnel are visible under the bridge (though they don't show in this photo). The Missabe Railroad Historical Society's convention took us here, August of 2006.

New Hampshire's Mount Washington. Well worth the trip, even in the heavy fog we had on this August, 2002, day.

S.S. City of Milwaukee

26 Nov 2006 127
At Frankfort (foreground) and Elberta, Michigan, in 1991. The ship had recently been appointed a National Historic Landmark. City of Milwaukee was built in 1930 for the Grand Trunk Railway, and ended her career in 1981 when the State closed down the Ann Arbor Railroad ferry operation. She sat there in the Frankfort harbor for nearly two decades, then moved to Manistee. She's functioning now as a museum . The alert reader will notice that the two sites I've linked to show slightly different dates for "built" and "retired." Such is life, I guess.
