Joan called from work to say she'd seen turkeys doing their courtship dances on Cochran Road this morning. I climbed in my car.
Found 'em. Two males, both putting on quite a show for six or eight females. Unfortunately, too far away to do them justice. But this pic's a hint.

Another photo from last Saturday's little Mulliken walkabout. The view from the south end of Potter Street.

The remains of a corn field, a few miles south of Mulliken, Michigan. Doubtless they'll plant beans here in a few weeks.

One of these structures was once known as " The World's First All-Steel Barn ."
I've a story for that field, too, but not for today.
==========
Last December 15's 366 Snaps session was odd and fulfilling. I stopped at the store for my morning RC Cola, then headed out amongst the local farms--Charlotte Highway to Eaton Highway to Gates Road to Saginaw Highway to Dow Road to Grace Highway back to Gates back to Saginaw back to Mulliken (which is the same road as Charlotte), and home. The excursion didn't take me far, but occupied most of an hour.
Along the way I shot 32 photographs. About half got messed up--I was still too impatient for the FujiFilm camera--but the other half were keepers. This was the last of the set.
A good haul.
I'd originally planned to post five images today, none of which were this one, but I've changed m' mind....
==========
The lonely farmhouse photo I posted to 366 Snaps speaks for itself, I think.

Last November 24 I took a double handful of pix around town....
This is on Charlotte Highway (same as Mulliken Road), just north of the tracks, not far from downtown Mulliken. Near as I can tell this barn's in the village, though it's not clear why the village boundaries are so much larger than the settled portion.

Eventually a photo-a-day project consumes you. You watch for photo ops constantly, mentally framing everything you see. You take odd routes to places just to scope out the scenery. You start carrying your camera nearly everywhere. Your attention wanders at inconvenient times and places.
The project begins as a lark. After a few weeks it becomes part of your routine. After three months it's become an obligation. After six months it occasionally becomes an obsession. By the 300th day it's become--well, more than a hobby, but probably less than a job. It reflects your mood, and influences your mood. This is not entirely a good thing.

I was an awful photographer last October 13--distracted, in a hurry, out of focus. Not sure why....
I'm a better photographer than this. Really. I am.
==========
The 366 Snaps shot was of cars and school busses parked along M-43 for a high school cross country meet at Ledge Meadows golf course, which hosts an invitational every October. The photo's all right, but it really doesn't tell a story--much less the story in the title.
I remember running in the cold and the wet when I was in high school. The vehicles brought those memories back. I have no nostalgia for those days.

Up to this point I'd mostly shot 366 Snaps photographs inside the house, somewhere in Mulliken, or on trips to and from Grand Ledge. Beginning on March 2 I'd consciously branch out....
Both this outtake and the photo I selected for my daily post ("One White Tree") are early examples of a common 366 Snaps theme--woods across a field, consciously framed to show depth and/or distance. So were most of the rest of the day's shots. While this wasn't the first time last year I just got in the car and drove around photographing the local farms, it was the first time I went out consciously scouting for photo locations.
I'm pretty sure this farm's on Dow Road--likely the Bonley Farm . I'd get better at framing these pics, but I think this one worked out pretty well.

I'm not particularly pleased with this photo. I posted many similar pics last year that were sharper and more interesting.
Last February 23 I had a photo idea, sought out the location, and posted that idea. Everything else was an insurance shot. Or, in virtually all cases, rehearsals for photos I'd post later at 366 Snaps .
==========
Regarding the lumberyard photo: In the late 1960s my parents seriously considered buying a piece of land "Up North" and putting up a house. Since Mom and Dad didn't really have a specific design in mind they collected house plans and catalogs. Two of the plans were from Hamill Homes in Grand Ledge, and one of those was a gothic cottage with gingerbread trim.
Thus the title of my 366 Snaps photo ("They Sold Gingerbread House Kits"). The image shows the showroom/warehouse/lumberyard that housed Hamill Homes, which is a couple miles down the local railroad mainline from Mulliken. I believe they closed up shop in the mid-1990s.
A careful inspection of the Hamill photograph will convince you that I worked Photoshop Elements hard to make it presentable. "Sharp-edged" would not be an appropriate description of my February 23 photographs. Sometimes it's like that, whatever the camera, but in this case I suspect the issue was a dirty lens.
As things worked out Mom & Dad bought a couple cottages in the Delton area. I discussed that a few days ago .
