Up the Pyramid

28 Sep 2006 92
The "official" trail from the Pyramid Point trailhead is a bit under three miles and includes a side-path to the top of the bluff; that's where yesterday's photo was taken. Further down the trail we found this alternative route up the back of the dune; quite steep, and perhaps a hundred foot climb. Takes you to a different point on the bluff, and a view of Good Harbor Bay. Besides the steep path, this particular spot is delightful because it plainly demonstrates that dunes are impermanent, as the hill atop Pyramid Point is obviously migrating, and taking a bite out of the woods behind the sandpile.

Pleiku Tropo Hill 1971

17 Aug 2006 231
Many folks who spent their war in or near Pleiku recall these 60-foot-tall antennas . I've mentioned them several times m'self, so it's about time I gave you a good photo of 'em. For me, they were a link in the communications system I used and adminstered; other local signal folks kept 'em running, though. I'm certain this hill has a local name, but we all called it Tropo. I lived directly down the hill from these fellows, just barely out of their line of fire. Cats lived in the concertina wire, and were about as friendly as the fence. See Pleiku66's comment, below. I bow to his superior memory. Pleiku, Republic of Vietnam, 1971. Shot more-or-less from Tropo Hill. I think the buildings in the middle distance are the nearby Montagnard village. See this map to sort out the terrain.... Camera: Minolta SR-T 101

Still on Coast Guard property in Marquette, Michigan, but tours are guided by the staff of the Marquette Maritime Museum. A fascinating building, slowly being restored.
