Mom's Mums
Memorial

Very pretty flowers from Mom's funeral , I think sent by the Banner family/Riverside Greenhouse. This basket decorated our front porch all last summer, then perished with the frost.
A year later it lives on, carrying my mother's memory, in this photo.

Another picture of Mom, to remember her birthday. This was taken in San Diego, perhaps by brother-in-law Bob Johns, around the turn of the century (that phrase still sounds wrong ). She and her sisters had gathered for what they all expected would be their last time in one place.

Mom would have been 80 today.
Dad took this photo on an unspecified Lake Michigan beach in 1976. Actually, he took this picture three times, which was definitely out of character; but it's a nice picture.
Looks comfy, doesn't she?
Mom and Lake Michigan

Fifteen years ago this week.
I think this is Christmas Cove, which is north and west of Northport. Fundamentally, though, the precise location doesn't really matter; it's a beach, and that's Lake Michigan.
My father passed away in November of 1990. A few months later I got a call from Mom, who'd decided to escape to Traverse City for a few days and invited me to come along. Of course I accepted.
So in March of 1991 we spent a long weekend visiting places she and Dad had been frequenting for decades--Leland, Northport, Suttons Bay; the beaches at Glen Haven, at Peterson Park, at both Traverse Bay lighthouses, at Christmas Cove. We had meals at Fischers, at Dills, at the Bluebird. We stopped at Jolli-Lodge; since I'd not been there before, she gave me a little walking tour. Then she arranged with the Jolliffes for her summer vacation.
But mostly we walked the beaches, Mom lost in her thoughts, me lost in mine. Dad was a beach-walker, and a collector of Petoskey Stones. He was on our minds, and in our hearts.

My mom, Hatti Dinda, doing a crossword and chatting with her sister Violet, at Jolli-Lodge in 1999. This is a cabin interior, and more or less typical; the lodge is a little different.

My parents got married 58 years ago today. Seemed like a good excuse to share this mid-1980s photo. Mom always claimed the silly grins resulted from being slightly tipsy.
See Preacher Debra's comments, below, for this photo's context....
Mom at Meijer Gardens

This is Harriett (Hatti) Dinda on Mother's Day, 2000. Joan and I met Mom, Debbie, & Dick at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, and wandered through the spring flowers and the sculptures (da Vinci's horse had just arrived). A wonderful day, and I took some delightful portraits.

Mom @ Sleeping Bear

That's my mother, looking out over the Sleeping Bear Dune in 1973. Dad took this photo with his Argus C3, and I scanned it from a slide. That much I know for sure. What follows is speculation.
My best guess is that this was shot from what is now called Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, but which was then called Sleeping Bear Dunes Park. I think the view is across Glen Lake, generally toward Glen Arbor.
As I say, speculation. But there really aren't all that many places you can find a view like this, and fewer yet with picnic tables.

A flower a day for January ....
In memory of my mother, Hatti Dinda. These were from her garden.

My mother, on Mother's Day in 2000. Mom was born on April 7, 1926; she'd have been 88 today.
Taken with a Nikon N90s; scanned from a negative.
