Lake Michigan Sunset

31 May 2005 91
The sun sets over Lake Michigan, near Leland, Michigan. The Manitous are on the horizon in this photo. Joan and I had hiked down the beach from Jolli Lodge. This picture was taken with a "free" Vivitar point'n'shoot camera on Labor Day weekend in 2002. Jolli was one of my parents' favorite places. Mom and Dad started spending summer weeks in Leland in the eighties, and after Dad passed away Mom made a practice of spending summer's last week there. We "kids" would join her for the final weekend. A fine resort, beautiful on the lake's shore.

Lake Michigan Shoreline

Another scan from Dad's Argus C3 slides taken in 1973. This is Lake Michigan, but I really can't be much more precise than "somewhere around Sleeping Bear Dunes." If forced to guess, I'd suspect it's at Glen Arbor, just from the slide sequence. But I'd not depend on that. Pretty and peaceful, whereever it was. It's clear to me that my photography was influenced by my father's--and that his was influenced by mine. It's something more than we vacationed the same places; I see the same sorts of photo ops that Dad did. That's OK, of course.

Broken Water

09 Sep 2006 80
Another photo taken from the breakwater at Grand Marais, Minnesota. I like all those colors, and all that motion. While it's difficult to use the (viewfinder-less) FujiFilm F10 in bright light, the results are often quite fine.

Split Rock Hazard

13 Aug 2006 64
A decade ago, we--my mother, Joan, Kalamazoo Richard , Preacher Debra , and me--spent our vacation wandering around northern Minnesota . One of the main objects of the trip was taking Mom to see Split Rock Lighthouse , but when we stopped the fog was so heavy that you couldn't actually see the lighthouse. Not a disaster, exactly, but certainly a disappointment. Mom claimed to be satisfied that she'd seen the interior. Visibility was far better this week. Here's a photo which shows pretty well why a light was needed at that location; shallows, rocks, and high cliffs. A bad combination.

This came out nicely, I think. Taken during last weekend's Door County trip.

Waterfall

08 Jan 2006 81
Can anyone tell me what waterfall this is? Found amongst my father's slides. Taken in 1962, so it's likely from the same vacation as the Siblings pic ; therefore it's almost certainly in Michigan's U.P. But I don't recognize it. Regardless: A terrific shot. Photo by Roger Dinda Camera: Argus C3
