On the edge of Mulliken. This appears to have been the cemetery office at one point, but has deteriorated considerably. Several sheds are attached for cemetery maintenance.

I'm not entirely certain what this grave marker means . I suspect it's something about rebirth, but the metaphor doesn't quite work for me--I'd like it better if the new growth came out of the ground instead of a planter. Nonetheless, this is a marvelous piece of art that's held up very well for over a century. Meadowbrook Cemetery, Roxand Township, Mulliken, Michigan. Facebook folks tell me this is a Woodmen of the World Women's Auxiliary monument. I claim absolutely no cemetery expertise.

Roxand Township's Moyer Cemetery (as the sign says). And the winter. But the snow is melting!

The Crow

A crow, in the fog, on a tombstone, at the graveyard. Watching.... Once again the Galaxy Tab's limitations as a camera work in my favor as this photograph loses most detail--which enhances the intended effect. Good photography's not mainly about your tools; it's about using your tools well. Or creatively. ========== Last September 14 was another foggy morning, and I set out to take a moody photograph. I started with some downtown Mulliken pix, then wandered around the local farms for a bit, and finally settled at the graveyard. ========== The 366 Snaps photo, also taken at Mulliken's Meadowbrook Cemetery, captured the morning fog's mood well, I thought, and was pretty much the photo I intended for the stop. But it was difficult to ignore the crow, watching me work.... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Here the haze has helped me create the illusion that the graveyard goes on forever.... My 366 Snaps session for last July 6 is one of the more interesting sets in the series. I played with shadows and contrasts. Every photo's there in two or three versions, with the camera's settings changed radically from shot to shot. Dark photos, washed-out photos; high-contrast and low-contrast versions of the same framing; photos in bright sun, in dark corners, with sunlight and shadows mixed. I was getting pretty comfortable with the V1's controls. ========== The hosta photo I posted to 366 Snaps seems not to require comment..... ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . This is the same photo as that I posted to 366 Snaps a year ago, but a different treatment. It looks like the original version used my then-usual Neopan (film) printed on Polymax (paper) imitation using Bibble Pro's Andrea plugin ; this version imitates Ilford on Ilford, which was once my film camera norm . But rarely with this high contrast. You'll see this setup again. ========== This photograph is an outtake (well, an alternate take, I suppose) from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Number of project photos taken: 15 Title of " roll :" Meadowbrook Cemetery Other photos taken on 4/13/2012: Pretty much the usual thing: 42 flower census pix using the Nikon 1.

Eventually your everyday-photo shooter's bound to seek out something s/he's never photographed before. Last February 22 that turned out to be the local cemetery, which somehow I'd not previously visited. It's not a large graveyard, but it's too large to capture in a single photograph. I shot this day's pics with the phone's Little Photo application, which I've mentioned before . It's a weaker camera app than the Bionic's native application, but has more interesting post-processing tools. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
