Small Mountains, but steep

On Friday afternoon, we skipped out of the convention for a short walk around downtown Toronto. Found this untitled sculpture by Anish Kapoor in Simcoe Park. Camera: FujiFilm FinePix F10 Photo by Joel Dinda

From inside SkyDome (well, Rogers Centre). The Yanks beat the Jays tonight.... Camera: FujiFilm FinePix F10 Photo by Joel Dinda

Flower Box

Richard and I are spending the weekend in Toronto. We escaped from the convention for a few minutes, and I found these neat flowers on an unexpected balcony.

National Anthem

29 Aug 2007 119
Members of Lansing's Capitol City Chordsmen perform the Star Spangled Banner before last night's baseball game at Oldsmobile Park. The Lugnuts beat the Loons by a 7-4 score. Original photo here . Game photos here .

Steam Whistle Brewery

Another photo of the roundhouse alongside SkyDome (Rogers Centre). Not sure why the sky isn't blue in this photo, but that's the way my camera caught it.

Roundhouse

06 Aug 2005 107
Old CN roundhouse, with coaling and water tower ruins, Toronto. The Canadian National Railway used to have an enormous rail yard near downtown Toronto, which is marked by the CN Tower and partly occupied now by the SkyDome (Rogers Centre). This roundhouse, and a much smaller yard, are all that remain. You can see Lake Ontario in the background. The picture's a little noisy largely because I shot it through a window. A Memorial to Commemorate the Chinese Railroad Wor…

Just west of SkyDome/Rogers Centre in Toronto; evidently dedicated in 2003. Really a terrific monument.

Four Wizards

Fort Wayne pitchers Derek McDaid, Jake Ociesa, Stevie Delabar, and pitching coach Wally Whitehurst before the game... Original photo here . Game photos here .

He Swings!

03 Jul 2007 90
Lansing Lugnuts third baseman Josh Bell--not to be mistaken for Great Lakes Loons 3B JB--follows through at West Michigan's Fifth Third Ballpark. The catcher's Louis Ott (normally an infielder); the ump is Takeshi Hirabayashi. Original photo here . More game photos here .

Potential Blue Jays

13 Jun 2007 120
Dayton at Lansing, 6/12/2007. Lansing pitcher Julio Pinto, with second baseman Scott Campbell in the background. The Dragons won by a 10-6 score. Original photo here . More game photos here .

M.A.C.

04 Apr 2007 87
Finally, a ball game. Michigan State ballplayer Adam Slusher, wearing a retro M.A.C. uniform (that being Michigan Agricultural College, MSU's ancestral school.) I suspect that makes him an Aggie, since the Spartan nickname dates from when the school was MSC (Michigan State College, of course). State rallied in the ninth to tighten the game to 4-3. Lansing's Lugnuts held on to win the exhibition.... More game pix here .

Tommy

10 Apr 2007 97
Tom Brookens, infielder for the 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers , is now managing the West Michigan Whitecaps. The 'Caps played their home opener last night, losing to Lansing. It was cold . More photos from the game here . A few more photographs of Brookens here . My website's Brookens page here .

Bambino

14 Mar 2006 165
The Babe was wandering around SkyDome (sorry: Rogers Centre) before the Yanks/Blue Jays game on August 5, 2005. I imagine there's a backstory, but it turns out I don't really care. SABR 35 Convention photo. This photo's also posted on my other (baseball) Flickr .

Head First!

15 Jan 2006 97
Fort Wayne's Yordany Ramirez dives for safety at Lansing's Oldsmobile Park in a successful second-inning steal on September 1, 2005. That's Lansing's Eugenio Velez waiting for the throw at second, with Luggie shortstop Ryan Klosterman moving over to back up the play. David Hicks watches the play develop from first base. I miss baseball. ------- In the event you don't already know, I'm moving most of my baseball pix to another Flickr account: mwlguide . See you there!

Every year's convention of the Society for American Baseball Research is scheduled to include a major league game. This year's game saw the Blue Jays host the Yankees at Rogers Centre. The Yanks won, big.
