Duane & Kyle Estep, and Dennis Dubois at the Charlotte Bluegrass Festival, which is just ending (ignoring the parking lot pickers) as I write this. New County Grass is a Flint, Michigan, band. Had an excellent time this year. Hoping and expecting better crowds next year, when the promoters will have more lead time. My thanks to Wes Pettinger and everyone for rescuing my favorite weekend.

John Morris used to promote the Charlotte (MI) Bluegrass Festival. Eventually the financial risks and the time investment took all the fun away, so he sold the festival to Jim Wilder. These days John sells records, chats with passers-by, and listens to the musicians on the stage. And enjoys himself.

Kalamazoo Fire Department's Engine 9, as photographed by Martin Sernstinger at the Kalamazoo Fairgrounds in (roughly) 1955. Eventually KFD would move their training exercises to a specialized facility off King Highway, but these photographs predate that. Unfortunately, Dad didn't leave me any training-exercise photos half as dramatic as Alessandro Cani's . But Marty's pictures are, nonetheless, excellent. Don't recall who the handsome dude is. Partly that's because I was six in 1955, but mostly it's because it's been fifty years.

Kalamazoo firefighters, out playing with an old fire engine at the Kalamazoo fairgrounds, in 1955 or thereabouts. Another Martin Sernstinger photo inherited from my father, who was a KFD firefighter when he was young (and I was really young).

Some of the fire engine photographs in my father's collection were of trucks which were old when Martin Sernstinger caught them on film in the mid-1950s. This one was clearly taken during a training exercise at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.

A flower a day for January .... This one just happens to be another Bluegrass Festival picture. Imaging banjos and mandolins picking in the background.
