Jacksonburg Public Square

There's a historical marker in Jackson's Bucky Harris Park; it talks about the original settlement at what was then called Jacksonburg. The town's central square was apparently about where the park is.
One of the buildings on the square was the Stone Post Office , which was built in 1839 as the Blackwell Building and originally housed a general store. It must have been quite imposing to find this structure as you crossed lower Michigan on 1839's primitive Territorial Road .
Notice the remnants, here, of an earlier, less ambitious, mural project. I can't find anything about that project, though at least one of the artists is still active in the Jackson area.
You might hope that someone will restore the building--it's currently a warehouse used by Casler Hardware, to which it's attached. The paintings could certainly stand some touchups, too.
