First Reformed

The former First Reformed Church in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. The church is across from Bronson Park. The building on the right is the Kalamazoo County Court Building, and the church (and steeple) beyond First Reformed is First Congregational. First Reformed is apparently not in use ; I sincerely hope someone finds a way to keep it in good health. Please notice the nice garden in the foreground, and the war memorial on the Courthouse grounds. The near vicinity of Bronson Park's pretty classy. The park's mostly surrounded by churches and public buildings. The churches are all named First--besides the Reformed and Congregational congregations, there are Presbyterian, Methodist, and (just off the park) Baptist institutions around the downtown greenspace. For most of my life there was also a First Church of Christ Scientist, but that's moved and their building's part of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The public buildings, besides the KIA and the courthouse, include the Civic Theater, City Hall, and the Library. The YWCA used to be here, but it's moved and the premises are occupied by Greenleaf Trust, who've done a delightful restoration/reconstruction of the building. It's a good place.

A Blue Flag, spotted & captured by the nature trail at Seney Wildlife Preserve in Upper Michigan. Perhaps the prettiest iris I've ever seen. Credit where due: Joan spotted it first, and took a similar photo.

It's 1802, and the flag of the North West Co, a Canadian fur-trading company with a British charter, is still operating its remote headquarters at Grand Portage at the western end of Lake Superior. We sometimes call this "The willing suspension of disbelief." Grand Portage National Monument in northern Minnesota. That's Lake Superior beyond the stockade.

In front of our office, during yesterday's perpetual snowstorm . The blue flag is MIchigan's. (Hey, it's a state office .) Bright, sunny, and just gorgeous today, by the way.

No Game Today

Had to wait while my druggist filled a prescription yesterday, so I found myself wandering around downtown Grand Ledge with a camera. This cozy Pony League ballpark, called Fitzgerald Field, is tucked in beneath Bridge Street's bridge across the Grand River. This is a small, but fully functional, ballyard, with bleachers and dugouts and signs on the outfield fences. Needs some grass, though. Really quite cute. Shot this photo from the bridge; Second Island would be in sight if I'd pointed the camera to the right.

This would have been my pic-of-the-day last January 22 except it would have been my third consecutive commercial-building portrait. So I photographed the candle lantern--and didn't regret the substitution. ========== Most of what I ask of a pocket camera--besides that it take decent photographs--is that it be readily available. I really don't expect it to be as capable as my good camera. If I miss a shot because the automatic camera's stupid, well, that's the price I pay for refusing to always carry a near-pro camera. A couple years ago Joan and I both needed new pocket cams, so we bought a pair of Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H55 cameras for Christmas. The sales guy claimed they were "fast" cameras--which was not particularly true. However you measure "fast," this camera's at best moderate; it takes several seconds to wake up, doesn't focus quickly, and there's a significant shutter delay. The faster of two f-stop settings is 3.5, which could perhaps be called fast. Despite that complaint, the Cybershot's an excellent pocket camera. It's got a great zoom, and captures color well. I often used it in "Intelligent Auto Adjustment" mode, which is better than you'd think. If I needed more control (usually ISO adjustments), I'd use the "Program" or the (probably mis-named) "Manual" mode and make appropriate changes. Or I'd reach for the Nikon. The Cybershot had been my second camera for about a year when I began this project, and I was pretty comfortable with it. While I used the Cybershot it was a fine companion. Late last spring I gave the Sony away, not from dissatisfaction but because my brother needed a camera. I had other options, which we'll discuss as we move through the year. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps .
