We headed for Northern Michigan yet again yesterday, with today's Staley-Bennett Reunion at Boyne City as our main objective. We caught up with Joan's sister (Pam) and niece (Sarah) at Petoskey State Park on Saturday, and Joan shot this pic while we were exploring the beach. Had a pleasant evening built around an excellent dinner at Petoskey's Rio Grand Steakhouse.
Looks like I think I look.

Joan took this shot of me as I was getting the Old New Bike out last Saturday. Except for a short spin the night I picked it up, this was my first outing since the rebuild (illness, snow, ballgames, and mandated gym trips have interfered more than I'd have preferred).
Since Saturday I've taken the bike out a couple more times. It's everything I remembered, and everything I hoped.
One of these days I'll have to write about that outfit....

Me, reflected in a window at our hotel in St. Ignace....
Believe it or not, I was actually trying to shoot something else. Din't turn out as expected, but it's certainly interesting....

This would be me, aging before your very eyes....
On my fiftieth birthday, my colleagues threw me a party. Since I expected it, I brought my camera. Not sure who took the picture, but Vicky Dittmer was ringleader for the mess in the office. Picture taken 2/27/1999
Camera: Nikon N90s

Me, receiving a silly prize for making a formal suggestion which saved my employer (and Michigan taxpayers) thousands of dollars a month; September, 1991. I thought about chopping the sign out of this image, but somehow it belongs.
On the other hand, no one should wear a shirt like that if they can't keep it tucked in straight. Oh, well.
Photo by Homer N. Smith, our bureau director. The print, like the scan, is really quite grainy. I've cropped out a lot of empty wall.

Me, just back from Vietnam in late 1971 or early 1972. Reading Joseph Featherstone's Schools Where Children Learn. We (my father, my family, Action Now , whatever--sometimes it was hard to tell the roles apart) spent a lot of time arguing with the school board in the sixties and seventies, and I was doing my homework. Or something. Probably still thought I'd grow up to be a teacher. Such is life.
That ugly shirt was my favorite for years. No accounting for taste.
Probably Dad shot this picture, but with my Minolta SR-T 101.

Yes, I really wore my hair like that. So sue me.
Mom did this sketch, based on my high school graduation photograph. Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High School, 1967.

Likely taken by Doug Lyttle , though the photographer is not credited on the photo or its folder. If I was five, this photo was taken in 1954.

Katherine Case, that would be, who's my cousin Julia's daughter. Taken on Thanksgiving, a couple years back.
Kate says as long as she's known me I was usually carrying a camera. Which is probably true.

And a self-portrait, in the mirror. I'd post a similar photo to 366 Snaps on April 10 .
It snowed last February 24th. Between the weather and my need to do prep work (mostly laundry) for our impending vacation, I only shot indoor pictures.
But I shot a lot of indoor pictures. I tinkered with the camera settings, playing with focus (as best I could control it), depth of field (likewise), and contrast. I also experimented with camera angles and lighting.
I was testing the camera's limits in easily-controlled situations. I'd shoot many of these photographs again, with different cameras, so most of the day's shots from can be called rehearsals for photographs I'd take later in the project.

Rant!
By this time I was growing weary of the Bionic. While the software is adequate , the phone makes a frustrating camera. The main issue is ergonomics. The design features that make the Bionic's hardware a good telephone (and/or a useful computer) work against its camera functionality. This is a difficult camera to hold still, as there's really nothing to grab except the device's edges. The bracing I routinely do to stablize my DSLR simply isn't possible when you're holding a narrow glass-and-aluminum box. And the camera's on-screen shutter release requires a certain amount of finger contortion; this does not contribute to image stability.
More: The lens is merely adequate, and easily soiled. (To be fair, it's also easily cleaned.) The zoom--which seems to be entirely electronic--is a joke; I didn't get a single decent zoomed photo during this month of experimentation.
This is not meant to suggest that the camera's not useful--I got some excellent photographs last February, and everyone encounters situations where an adequate camera's enough to document their life. But I'd not call it a serious camera.
End of rant.
Of course, Moto didn't intend it as a serious camera. And I'm actually glad I invested a month in it.
