Midwest League, April 27, 2006; Burlington Bees @ Southwest Michigan (Battle Creek) Devil Rays Sorting through some old scans. Managers Jim Gabella (Bees) and Skeeter Barnes (D'Rays) meet with umpires Kellen Levy and De'Andre Anderson before the game to trade lineups, discuss the ground rules, and whatever. Posting this because I like Gabella's pose. The stripes are because I was shooting through a protective screen, which the Minolta SR-T 101 doesn't handle that as well as my Nikon D300. Watched the Lansing Lugnuts beat the Beloit Snappers from the Owners Box yesterday afternoon. Found these mementos from Tom Dickson's and Sherri Myers' past on the wall. I remember the Sultans. Yup. This is Colin Kaline, and his grandfather's in Baseball's Hall of Fame. Colin played third base for the West Michigan Whitecaps (a Tigers farm) last night. The 'Caps also have a Leyland (Patrick--Jim's son), an Avila (Nick--Alex's cousin, Al's nephew), and a Lemon (Marcus--Chet's son) on their roster. Definitely some Tiger in that ancestry. Went to Lansing's Opening Day game last night. Great game ; the Lugnuts won by a 3-2 score. This is Great Lakes Loons DH Devin Shines, checking with coach/manager John Shoemaker before retreating to second. The Nikon 1 did all right. Original photo here . 657 game photographs here .

Lansing's Peter Mooney's the shortstop, whose throw didn't get the batter-runner (Oliver Tavarez). The (forced-out) runner in the photo is QC's Ronny Gil; Jonathan Jones is in right field. Really pleased with my ballpark photos on Thursday, but they took hours (literally) to upload over our "high-speed" internet connection. Broadstripe should be ashamed for taking my money. This strange-looking play is a forceout at second by Lansing Lugnuts shortstop Gustavo Pierre, who's bent way out of shape holding a throw from first baseman KC Hobson. John Nestor's the Burlington Bees baserunner. All-in-all, just as odd as it looks. As was almost everything in this preposterous baseball game--which the Bees won by a 13-6 score. Great ballgame last night at Cooley Stadium. Lansing won 4-3, coming from behind and winning on a bases-loaded, ninth-inning error. Excellent weather, too; it's about time. Earlier in the game: Peoria's Matt Szczur gets back to first on a pickoff attempt. A few seconds later he'd make the second out in a 9-3 (RF-1B) double play.
