Breakers Off Sleeping Bear Point

Not big breakers; I've seen far larger waves on Lake Michigan. But these were running counter to an impressive headwind just as they hit the sandbars. The Manitou Islands in the background.

Breakers @ Christmas Cove

From last summer. Joan and I spent a week camping in sight of Lake Michigan; the wind never dropped to a comfortable level. Usually this beach is walkable, and quite attractive. Not on this day.

Pounding the North Pier

I told you we had bad weather in South Haven, then posted a bunch of photos from our one fairweather day. Most of the time Lake Michigan looked like this.... I'm not real happy with this shot, which was the second in the sequence just as I stepped on the walkway. By the time I got a better angle, the waves had diminished and those pix are pretty boring. This one at least shows the waves pounding against the north pier.

Lake Michigan

Best LARGE . My father walked beaches, so I grew up walking beaches. Mom would pack a lunch, we'd pile in the car and head to South Haven or St. Joe or wherever. We'd walk, sometimes for hours. Then for a long time I didn't walk beaches. Now I walk beaches again, though not as often as I'd like. This one happens to be Muskegon State Park. Explored (#50 on Wednesday, September 19, 2007). Thanks! (No longer in the top 500. Explore is mysterious.)

Lake Michigan

Another Cathead Bay photograph from last September. Leelanau State Park , at the end of Michigan's "little finger." Memorial: Norris Ingells, a photographer whose skills always captivated and delighted me, passed away Friday . I only knew him from his photographs and his writing, but it's a great loss nonetheless. One of Lansing's great treasures. -Added to the www.flickr.com/groups/cotc/ in the morning on December 20, 2005. Explored! #19 on Sunday, July 29, 2007, where it remains. Thanks, everyone!

Grand Marais Light

12 Aug 2006 77
From the breakwater, more or less by Coast Guard Station North Superior (so named because Grand Marais, Michigan, also had a CGS; Minnesota's Grand Marais had to have a unique designation). The huge private boat in the picture is called Northland; they were about to leave. I suspect they expected more privacy than the location actually afforded.

At Grand Marais, Minnesota; that's Lake Superior, folks.

Another view of Monday's dramatic waves. The South Manitou Island Lighthouse is about dead center in this photo....

Split Rock Hazard

13 Aug 2006 64
A decade ago, we--my mother, Joan, Kalamazoo Richard , Preacher Debra , and me--spent our vacation wandering around northern Minnesota . One of the main objects of the trip was taking Mom to see Split Rock Lighthouse , but when we stopped the fog was so heavy that you couldn't actually see the lighthouse. Not a disaster, exactly, but certainly a disappointment. Mom claimed to be satisfied that she'd seen the interior. Visibility was far better this week. Here's a photo which shows pretty well why a light was needed at that location; shallows, rocks, and high cliffs. A bad combination.
