Spent a long day in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, NC and then on up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Late Summer and Fall usher in a host of colorful wildflowers, some of which (for this southern boy) are more often found much farther north. That's the very thing I like about the high elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. That, plus the cooler mountain weather.

Long day trip down to the Coastal Plain of South Carolina -- Francis Marion National Forest, to be exact. Four hours each way from home, and then another three to four hours of driving around looking for photographic opportunities did make for a long trip.
But, I got to see what I came for: several autumn orchid species and other interesting and colorful wildflowers. I love that place...

Day trip to the Pisgah National Forest in Transylvania County, North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
This is the season for late summer wildflowers in western North Carolina -- especially pleasing were the Parnassia asarifolia or Kidney-leaf Grass-of-Parnassus and the Gentiana latidens or Balsam Mountain Gentian in the vertical bogs along the Parkway.

Walter Ezell and I met Liz Fox (a Flickr photography friend from Georgia), her two well-behaved dogs, and her friend Tom at DuPont State Recreational Forest for an outing to photograph the local native orchids and any other interesting wildflowers that we could find.
These three Aplectrum hyemale shots were actually taken in the Pisgah National Forest after we finished at DuPont.
