Today would be a busy one for us with lots of driving. We had three stops on the agenda: Lomond River Trail, a roadside area filled with orchids, and the sleepy village of Tilt Cove on the eastern coast of Newfoundand. The first location on this day was Baker's Brook Bog, located about 10 km (6 miles) north of Rocky Harbour. Last year, I had seen images of Dragon's Mouth orchid from this bog which had colored petals and a white or almost white lip. My friends Neil Jacobs and Jen Modliszewski had found some really nice specimens there. That is what I was looking for... Western Brook Pond is definitely a neat tourist attraction. There are boat tours (which we did not take) that shuttle tourists up a natural fjord created by glaciers thousands of years ago. To reach the boat ramp, you must take a wonderful, 3 km (~1.8 mile) trail through deep spruce woods and over numerous large bogs. The trail is both gravel and wooden boardwalk, and provides splendid scenery. We even saw a female moose munching vegetation not far from the boardwalk.
