Epipactis gigantea (Stream orchid)

20 Jun 2013 117
The second stop on the first day of our field trips was just down the road a few miles from the California Lady's-slipper orchid site. Epipactis gigantea does have a requirement for water nearby. At one location, we found a number of plants right next to a small stream. Just down the road, there were many more plants along an embankment and in a wet seepy depression. I think the flowers are quite beautiful although I had to spend more time photographing them than I preferrd because of the wind and the harsh sunlight. Having said that, I really love the way the flowers present themselves all lined up and facing the same direction... For more images and the story behind these images, check out Jim's Blog .

Cypripedium californicum (California Lady's-slippe…

19 Jun 2013 93
Our first stop on the first day of our Native Orchid Conference field trips was to a wet, wooded area along Caribou Road in Plumas County, California. Here we saw a very nice population of Cypripedium californicum or California Lady's-slipper orchid. This species can have up to twenty small white flowers on each stem. In addition, we found many Lilium pardalinum or Leopard Lily plants. We were to see many more of them during the day -- present in almost all of the wet, seepy areas we passed...
