Malaxis abieticola (Arizona Adder's-mouth orchid)

09 Aug 2016 120
At this year's Native Orchid Conference 2016 symposium, we made several field trips to see orchids. We found this species of Malaxis , Malaxis abieticola or Arizona Adder's-mouth orchid in the Chiricahua Mountains of southern Arizona. There are numerous mountain ranges that form what is known as "sky islands" -- ecosystems separated from each other by desert, distance, and altitude. Our first stop on the first day of our Native Orchid Conference field trips was to a wet, wooded area along Caribou Road in Plumas County, California. Here we saw a very nice population of Cypripedium californicum or California Lady's-slipper orchid. This species can have up to twenty small white flowers on each stem. In addition, we found many Lilium pardalinum or Leopard Lily plants. We were to see many more of them during the day -- present in almost all of the wet, seepy areas we passed...
