Spiranthes cernua (Nodding Ladies'-tresses orchid)

Walter Ezell and I made a day trip to a couple of sites in north Georgia. One of these was a site for Fringed Gentian, a plant not found growing wild in our home state of South Carolina. The next site we visited was a hilly seepage where orchids and other unusual wildflowers grow in profusion.

A day trip to several sites in north Georgia. Five of us spent the day at a mountain seep hoping to see and photograph a couple of species of orchids, and a lake-side meadow for a group of rare Pitcher Plants.

Spiranthes cernua (Nodding ladies'-tresses orchid)
30 Sep 2012 |
|
These are the last of the images I took rcently at a wonderful seep in north Georgia.
Among the Panassia were groups of the lovely Nodding ladies'-tresses orchid. This species is not supposed to have much of a fragrance, but these did, leading me to believe that they might have Spiranthes magnicamporum in their heritage...
This inflorescence is more than 7 inches (17.5 cm) tall.
