One final summer-season trip to the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina to finish up photographing the Fringed orchids. In addition, I found a specimen of one of our most rare and unusual orchids of the Carolina coastal plain: Pteroglossaspis ecristata or Spiked Medusa orchid .

This is the part 1 of 2 of my annual, mid-summer trip to the Carolina Coastal Plain. A couple of new friends from the D.C. area wanted to meet up with me in the Francis Marion National Forest to see what we could find to photograph. I also asked my good friend, Jeff Jackson (who lives in the area) to join us. For some reason, probably the drought along the coastal plain, the orchids were at least a week late getting started.
