Another day trip to one of South Carolina's premier wild places, Ashmore Heritage Preserve. It's about 40 minutes north of Greenville, SC, and is a great drive through the Appalachian foothills.
I just had to go back to the site where the Rattlesnake Plantain Orchids were blooming. The large group of 15 flowering stems is still not in full bloom, so I'll have to go back next weekend.

Here is a shot of the interesting foliage of this orchid. The leaves have this intricate pattern that is fairly easy to spot in the deep woods...

Here are a couple more shots of the Rattlesnake Plantain Orchid from this past weekend's trip...
The flowers are less than 1/4" (6mm) across.

Recent visit to one of South Carolina upstate's Heritage Preserves.
This was the real reason for going to the Heritage Preserve. This orchid usually blooms around mid-July, but since so many of our wildflowers were blooming early this year, I didn't want to miss it.
Turns out that this is the best year I have ever seen for this species. Normally, only one out of ten plants would be in bloom, but this year, about nine out of ten are in bloom!

Whie in the Pisgah National Forest to photograph Three-birds orchids, I found Crane-fly orchid and Rattlesnake Plantain orchid in full bloom. Couldn't pass up the opportunity for additional photography...
