The second day of my two-day trip to the Carolina coastal plain took me to southeastern North Carolina -- home of Brunswick County and the Green Swamp Preserve. The target species for this trip were the mid-Summer fringed orchids. We were very successful in our search, with wild orchids being seen in profusion.

Day trip with good friend, Jeff Jackson in the Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley (and Charleston) County, South Carolina. Our target species were the coastal plains fringed orchids and, of course, whatever else we could find to photograph.

These are the remaining shots from our weekend trip to the Carolina coastal plain. These images were taken in the Green Swamp, Brunswick County, North Carolina. This is a location for many rare plants, and is the home for some wonderful orchid species.
There were a few of these hybrid orchids blooming on Big Island in the Green Swamp. I'm always glad to see this one in the wild...

More orchids from our weekend trip to the Francis Marion National Forest. Finding some of these in bloom was a surprise, since I didn't think they would be in bloom yet. A couple of these were new finds for some of the out of towners in the group. I'm really pleased that I could take them to a place with such a variety of wild orchids...

This composite photo shows the putative parent orchids and their progeny. Since both parent species generally bloom about the same time of the year, it is understandable how a pollinator might take pollen from one plant species and deposit it in another plant species of the same genus. The result can be a very handsome hybrid.
