Day 1 of 2 results of a mid-May trip to the Carolina Coastal Plain. Day 1 was spent with good friend, Jeff Jackson in the Francis Marion National Forest, Berkeley County, South Carolina. We were able to find a number of flowering species -- a couple of rare ones, to boot!

Results of a long but rewarding day trip to the South Carolina coastal plain -- the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina, to be specific. Thanks to my good friend Dr. Richard Porcher, who joined me on a portion of this trip, I was able to locate and photograph the federally Endangered, Schwalbea Americana or American chaffseed .

On Saturday, May 22, the day after my book signing in Wilmington, NC, I joined a few TNC staff at a fairly new TNC site in Pender County, NC. It is not open to the public because it is still a part of an active hunt club, but I was priviledged to join the group on the field trip. The name of the site is McLean Savannah, and it is host to a number of orchid species as well as many carnivorous plant species.

We just returned from the 3-day annual symposium of the Native Orchid Conference. This year, we had our meeting in Wilmington, North Carolina. The field trips were held in the Green Swamp, a 17,000 acre holding managed by The Nature Conservancy. It is known for its wonderful native orchids as well as its superb carnivorous plants.
Since it was an orchid symposium, I will honor this by presenting orchid images in the first pass then follow up with other wildflowers in the next few days...
