This is the part 1 of 2 of my annual, mid-summer trip to the Carolina Coastal Plain. A couple of new friends from the D.C. area wanted to meet up with me in the Francis Marion National Forest to see what we could find to photograph. I also asked my good friend, Jeff Jackson (who lives in the area) to join us.
For some reason, probably the drought along the coastal plain, the orchids were at least a week late getting started. But we did find a few that were in bloom. The Pine Lilies never disappoint, and we found some good ones.

Two days in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina and along the Blue Ridge Parkway in several counties of the western North Carolina mountains.
The wildflowers up there are just spectacular this summer -- especially the orange Turk's-cap Llies. My favorite haunts along the Parkway are the wet drip faces of the road-cut cliffs. Many beautiful and unusual wildflower species prefer these constantly damp/wet places.
